Awful smell

I bought some in early spring that were fine. But the 10 bags I just got were awful. I opened the bag, and it smelled horrible, had mold and was filled with a lot of wood pieces. I needed to pot up a pepper plant so i decided to use a bag anyway and the next day my plant was filled with bugs in the soil of the pot. The only container of many that was filled with bugs. Super disappointed

This stuff is terrible!

I have done planting and horticulture work for years. I understand it is a “soil less” planting medium. This product is nothing but wood chips and wood chip dust. No vermiculite, no peat moss. I can’t imagine this medium would hold any moisture in sun containers in July and August. Bought two bags, returning one unopened. Sticking with Miracle Grow.

Pass on this one

I repotted a rose bush in this soil, and within days it lost ALL its leaves and the buds shriveled up. I thought it was transplant shock at first, but I noticed that whenever I watered the water poured out the bottom of the drainage hole and pooled up in the saucer. No matter how much or how little I watered it did this. I finally concluded it was not absorbing water so I replanted the bush AGAIN in the big name potting soil. The Members Mark soil had so many chunks and wood chips in it compared to the other. You could see and feel a difference. I only hope I am able to save my rose bush. I’ll not purchase this soil again!

What happened?!?!?

Last year we purchased over a dozen bags of this soil and regretted not buying more before it sold out. We just picked up 6 bags a week ago and it's horrible. Basically mulch. We've had dump truck loads of top soil brought in to fill our raised bed gardens that outshine this product by a wide margin. So disappointed and will be returning the other 5 bags and half of the opened bag :-(((

Stinks, more of a compost, full of bark and trash.

I bought 10 bags of this stuff and 10 of miracle grow. No comparison in quality. I researched the members mark potting soil and best I could find is that its made by Pennington soil. I love Pennington birdseed and thought that would be a plus for the potting mix. Not so! This stuff is full of pine bark and big gobs of what looks like cow fur or rock wool to me and has a molasses type smell. This would not be good for indoors in my opinion. I was putting it in 10 gallon fabric bags for flowers. The first few I did with MM only, the MM soil formed like a crust over the top and would not absorb water without going slow. It did work fair for transplanting and some of the seeds I planted. This looks more like a mulch and would probably work good for that since it kind of seals up. After the first few plantings I quit using as the main ingredient. I mixed it 50/50 with miracle grow in the bottom of the fabric bags for half of the bag, then finished topping off with miracle grow. In a 10 gallon bag most roots probably wont reach that far anyway. Mixing this way has worked well so far for roses, dahlias, rose of Sharon, squash, petunias. Probably need to do some more experimenting with it, for the price it does work as a filler but not by itself in my opinion.

Inconsistent

Purchased 30 bags and several were just bark or mulch with very little soil

We’re sorry to hear about your experience. This mix is a premium blend of peat, composted softwood bark, composted forest products, perlite, fertilizer, and a wetting agent. The mix should contain smaller bark pieces to aid aeration and plant stability. If you’re seeing anything different, please call us at 1-800-285-7333, and our team will be happy to help resolve the issue.
