Nope.

I bought two bags to fill large planters, planning to plant cilantro, dill and zinnia seed for a butterfly garden area. On opening the bag, large chunks of mulch and shredded wood were visible. I filled the planters, scattered the seeds and covered with another layer of potting mix. When I watered the planters, large mulch chips floated to the top, creating a layer on the top of the planters. In the photo, I have side by side comparisons with Members Mark and the more popular brand of potting mix sold at Sams. The next day, the top layer was dry as there was nothing to hold the moisture in place, it rapidly dried out since it's basically mulch. I'll have to give another review if the seeds germinate and grow well, but right now, I would not recommend this product or buy it again. I am usually impressed with Members Mark quality, but not this time.

More mulch than soil

Unusually love the members mark items. But this changed my mind. Upon opening there were mostly bark items at the top which made me think I bought mulch. After stirring it was a little better. But still mostly debris than potting mix. After being open of a week the top started to grow white fuzz. I'm not sure if it was mold or something else that was organic. The snake plant and palm tree enjoy the drainage but the Zinnia and spider plant aren't fans. I will likely mix with another bag and try again just to make sure, if it is the same it will make great soil to plant the spring garden with.

We’re sorry to hear about your experience. This mix is a premium blend of peat, composted softwood bark, composted forest products, perlite, fertilizer, and a wetting agent. The mix should contain smaller bark pieces to aid aeration and plant stability. If you’re seeing anything different, please call us at 1-800-285-7333, and our team will be happy to help resolve the issue.

I have used Sam club potting mix 55 quarts numerous times in the past... Today I just stopped by Sam Club in Allentown PA to buy one bag for my basil plant... I regretted it... there are so many wood chips (size 1-1.5 Inch length and .4 Inch width) and small wood balks. I only used a small portion to fill a planter, there is alot left in the bag. What is going on Sams? Very disappointed...I hate to return anything already opened....

Wood chips and styrofoam - don't buy

I would give it a zero if I could, it is nothing but wood chips and styrofoam. I would even categorize some wood chips as a stick. I have a picture of this year on the left, versus The miracle grow that Sam's club sold last year on the right. it is night and day. AND it must have a colorant because it is staining my porch.

Chunky, moisture management not great

Despite the moisture-management claim on the bag, the mix dries out very quickly and provides little if any additional moisture retention compared to Miracle-Gro Potting Mix, which I've bought in the past. Unfortunately, our club carried only the Member's Mark brand this year. Another issue is the large chunks of wood throughout the mix—the screening and sifting process leaves a lot to be desired. I bought ten bags, filled all my containers, and I'm stuck with it for the 2026 growing season. One thing I do appreciate is buying potting mix from Sam's Club. They store it indoors, so the bags are much lighter and easier to handle than the waterlogged, heavy bags often sold outdoors at other retailers. I just wish they offered another brand in addition to Member's Mark.

Terrible, no soil, just bagged mulch

Not even potting soil. Essentially mulch with an occasional rock. I cannot believe i paid for this garbage. Now I have to drive back to return this and buy miracle grow (which i normally buy but this looked similar in its description so I thought it was possibly made by miracle grow). I have better things to do with my time.....

Awful

Bought several bags of this potting soil last year. It was wonderful. Bought six bags this year and it was awful. There a huge amount of chunks of wood of up to 4” in length and up to 2” wide in the two bags I opened. Surprising me even more was that I found rusted metal bars in two of the bags I opened. About the circumference of a coat hanger (16 gage) and were all 8” long, bent in half. I returned the other bags as they were unusable.

Awful potting mix

I bought this last year after reading the mixed reviews of it being nothing more than mulch with some potting mix. They were right. If you're going to insist on still buying it, do so considering it as a mulch. I pulled it from all my containers & I use it as a top dressing for the plants until it's gone.

Used to be great; not anymore

We have bought this for our small plant business for several years and have used it side by side with the Miracle Grow potting mix with no noticeable difference. This year it seems the recipe changed and the difference is huge. I bought almost a pallet of it and it is all wood chips, no fertilizer and my plants planted in it look horrible compared to the ones planted in the Miracle Grow potting mix. I used to promote this as a great alternative. Now I'm not sure my business can survive with the damage done by this new recipe.

Inferior potting soil

This is the 1st bad product or review I have gotten from Sam's. I had a business membership from 2000 to 2017 a plus membership since 2017. I bought 6 bags of Members Mark potting soil Mix on May 13. I used it to plant a Mother's Day present and over $200 in annual plants in baskets and pots. I had purchased the Miracle Grow Moisture control potting soil for the previous years. This soil is inferior. My Wave petunias are normally hanging down about 2 feet below the baskets. My mother in-law talked about how her present isn't growing like it did every other year, my neighbors have noticed the difference in my plants.
