It is firm but also you sink in a tad, it's hard to explain but its perfect for me as a side sleeper and my husband who is a stomach sleeper. I read that it takes 48 to 72 hours to fully decompress, but within a couple of hours it appeared fully open. It is very comfortable, firm but soft and comfortable. I was worried about body heat retention, but so far, that hasn't been an issue - I assume the gel helps. There was no "off-gassing" that I've read about with other mattresses. So far, we are very happy with the purchase.
