Very Good Fertilizer. Adequate Crabgrass Preventer. Lackluster Combination Product

Like I've said in my other reviews I do my homework before I buy. Here was the one place that I didn't and I screwed up. The fertilizer is this bag is very good. I love Scotts fertilizers. Never burned a lawn yet. [knocks on wood] That said, the fertilizer could be better. I'm sad to say that this version of the fertilizer lacks some of the micronutrients the Super Turf Builder lines have and if I could steer a future purchaser in that direction, the Super Turf Builder lines are definitely the way to go. Secondly as a result of this purchase, I'm not a fan of the combination products. The crabgrass preventer, Halts, that is in the product must be applied early before germination of the crabgrass seeds begins (a pre-emergent preventer). In some cases this may be late winter to very early spring. In fact it can be so early that you might be needing to wait to apply your fertilizer for another month or so. Having the two products combined then can create a little issue as you can see. Then there is the issue of the Halts crabgrass preventer. It prevents germination of crabgrass seeds (which require 3 consecutive days of 56 degree weather to germinate), but it will also prevent the germination of any new grass seed you may want to put down. So if you are the type to over-seed in the spring or fall, then you can't over-seed for 3 - 4 months after application! This is a fact that some people fail to realize and then wonder why their newly laid grass seed isn't germinating. Then if you read the label, it says once laid down to not aerate, rake or disturb the lawn as you will break the protective barrier of the Halts. Hmmm...guess you better start raking and de-thatching REAL early if you plan to use this product correctly. I didn't quite know all of this at the time of application. I was too busy raking, de-thatching, and aerating since it had warmed up. I then applied this product. Oops. So I got the affect of a beautiful green spring lawn, but some green crabgrass and weeds coming up too as I missed the pre-emergent window, albeit not by much. So in short, the fertilizer is very good, but not great. The Halts is a great crabgrass preventer, BUT only if timed correctly (as it is not possible to act as a post-emergent treatment), and you don't plan to over-seed, rake or disturb the lawn. As such, due to the issues of correctly timing crabgrass preventers, combined with the needs of over-seeding and fertilizing at the right time, I just cannot recommend this product. To correct for the over-seeding concerns, one would want to go with Scotts Starter Fertilizer with Crabgrass Preventer instead. That contains Tupersan, a chemical that selectively inhibits crabgrass germination (and other weeds!) while allowing grass seed to germinate. Nice, stuff, but as you will see, it costs much more $$. If you do go the separate and not combination product route, and you are looking for a product that prevents crabgrass in a pre-emergent AND early post-emergent manner (just in case you are just a little late with your application), while still catching and preventing more of the common weeds too, well, you will have to look outside of Scotts.

Front Yard Only

I put this stuff down in my front yard only. I did that because I was trying to go all natural as second year home owner, I thought it would be good. Crab grass grew in the back taking over the back yard and spread periodically in the front. The front yard did fine but, I will put it down on the entire yard next year. I still have a lot left over turf builder left over, should I throw it out or reuse it next season?

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Scotts products have been used on my lawns for over 25 years. Applying the crabgrass preventer according to the instructions on the bag increases the odds of not having crabgrass. The trustworthy products Scotts produce allows my lawns to have great curb appeal and I often pass on to coworkers my secrets for success. My properties are on corner lots and am always trying to maintain my lawns. I have tired other cheaper products but the results unsatisfactory.

This product does more than one thing and works great

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After using this product I was extremely satisfied. I used it in the spring and it worked great on my crabgrass. It also fed my yard and made it look great. I love green grass and this product really made my yard green. I have tried similar products in the past and have not found anything that compares to Scotts.

Excellent product

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have used Scotts Turf Builder at two homes; one in Illinois and now our home in Colorado. We have people stop and ask what we use on our lawn. Most popular comment, "it looks like a golf course". Thank you for this excellent product that has given us beautiful lawns for over 40 plus years!!

Great results

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Had issues with crabgrass in a fescue lawn at a house I bought 9 years ago. The second year of ownership I started with the Turf Builder Halts crabgrass preventer and saw great results. Removed about 90% the first year. Since then I have used this product every spring and have eradicated all crabgrass growth. The lawn is also very green by the application of this product.

Works pretty well but not perfectly when it gets very hot..

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use it every Spring at the recommended time and rate, but along the driveway where it broils in summer I always get a crab grass break out. Maybe Natural Selection has produced resistant crab grass?

Best I've ever used!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've had professional lawn care people take care of my lawn over the years. Two years ago when I retired I decided to take care of my own fertilizing and lawn care. Well, my lawn looks the best that it ever has thanks to Scotts products!

Scotts Turf Builder is the new paradigm!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have used Scotts Turf Builder several years. We live on a busy street close to our local hospital. We get compliments several times in the summer, for the looks of our grass. There is nothing to compare with this product!

Good fertilizer.

Been using Scott's Fertilizer for years. I've tried using cheaper brands in the past and they just don't work as well. My only complaint is that every year, including this year, a bag Springs a leak and I end up with a bunch of fertilizer in the trunk of my car. I don't think I'm handling the bags roughly but perhaps when they are stacked on pallets they receive some abuse. So bottom line is great fertilizer put in a cheap bag.
