My Go-To For An Old-Fashioned

A successful Old-Fashioned focuses the attention on the bourbon, which slowly unpacks layers of flavors with each sip. BHDR has a depth and complexity that may get lost or overpowered in other cocktails. In an Old-Fashioned the port balances the spicyness of the Rye(s) beautifully, without confusing the palate with all the herbs and spices of a vermouth. Use your oversized ice cube for this one, and don't forget the orange peel twist. It's a bit much for a Manhattan or Boulevardier as the vermouth fills that role in both those drinks. But back to the Old-fashioned. It's really like a bourbon designed for that, and I've found it unmatched. I offer the following not as criticisms, but for context: the otherwise excellent Knob Creek is too hot, and Makers Mark (the ultimate beginner's bourbon) too flabby. Bulleit is another fine bourbon or rye, but by comparison, lacks the complexity offered here. Eagle Rare might appeal to the 'purist'. But for sitting and sipping, a BHDR Old-fashioned is the one, or two...

Give it time

This is quite an unusual bourbon and not the Basil we have all enjoyed for so long. First sip I was ready to rate 1 star, but persevering with this pay dividends and I am now a convert. Not one for words, but the port comes through and makes for a great sipping experience. Recommend no ice.

Very distinct and tasty Bourbon

I am a scotch drinker by love, but being in Tennessee, Bourbon is much more accessible. There is also not much better after dinner than a Bourbon on a rock. In saying this, I have always found there to be ubiquitous flavor to Bourbon (ie the flavor difference was not abounding.) Most wheated Bourbons tasted the same, and although there is some differentiation in the Rye's, they are still highly correlated. I had the opportunity to taste this Bourbon this past weekend at my brother-in-laws house. I found myself drawn to it the four nights we visited. I had to go buy him another bottle. Rich and distinct in flavor. Nice Bourbon that I will take a place dominance in my liquor cabinet.

Excellent Experience

I find my way around many bourbons & ryes, more than most women I assume, our family loves to collect. I am honestly ALL about this dark rye. I find myself reaching for this bottle more than most. I constantly hype it to strangers, friends & family. The depth of flavor, comfort of heat without the overwhelming burn, the fullness & rich color... It's absolutely wonderful. It's more than worthy for a spot on home the liquor shelf, for a gift, for a celebration, you won't be disappointed. So smooth & easy to drink.

It's Christmas Day- What a Perfect Bottle!

This is our second bottle. It's Christmas day and EVERYONE loves it! This is a favorite among our top shelf picks and never fails to impress both regular picky drinkers and those that don't like a whiskey at all. This bottle is a wonderfully silky-smooth drink upfront with great flavors and a finish that stays delightful and impresses you with an abundance of flavors. GREAT bottle!

Wow. Smooth ride for your taste buds.

When the first rush of this rich off walnut shade liquid reaches your taste buds, it's as if a orchestra is blurting out their magnum opus. Each sip is a new experience, since the peaks of the rye are sharp, while the valleys of the port remain ridged and mellow. Such an homage to what is beautiful from both. While craftfully turned into somthing new. Tasting notes- Almond, Sherry, Oak, Cherry, Dried fruit. Nose- Charcoal, Grain, Carmel Legs-Thin,

With time it becomes one of the greats

When I first opened a bottle of Basil Hayden's Dark Rye I wasn't too impressed to be honest, but after drinking 1/2 the bottle and letting it sit for few months it's changed into an experience I've never had before. I think the addition of port has helped this rye evolve into a very unique whiskey. If you're a wine lover, then I think you'd enjoy this whiskey.

The smoothest by far!

I drink many types of whiskeys. I searched high and low for the dark rye. I found it with a drive involved. I can honestly say this is better than regular basil and basil is by far my favorite! I just hope this becomes a regular offering! Very very smooth, I can smell and taste the port. A nice woody flavor as well! Well done my friends!!!

Tried it on the recommendation of a bartender

I usually drink Bourbon and the wheated type when I can get it. Bartender recommended this Basil Hayden Dark Rye as one that she prefers. I bought a bottle and am pleasantly surprised with the smoothness, taste and aftertaste. It will be part of my drink choices in the future. A very good drink on the rocks.

I was amazed!

Talking with a young Bartender about touring the Bourbon Trail around Bardstown Kentucky, she he offered a shot of her favorite Rye. Not a Rye drinker but had to get a bottle for home. So smooth and enjoyable, my thoughts have changed! A definite go to in the evening.........
