LOVE this gate!
I purchased this for 2 reasons: 1) to keep my 2 1/2 yr old daughter out of certain areas & 2) to keep my 10 month old pug puppy out and in certain areas. When you first get this item, you will probably think that yours is defective. It probably isn't. Apparently, they leave a large gap where the latch connects to the gate. When you pull it out of the packaging you will really notice this. They make it this way so that when you tighten the gate against the door frame, the gap shortens and everything works properly - so don't freak out until you actually try the gate! And definitely try the gate in the door frame before you install the cups just in case it doesn't work for some reason, though it probably will. We just bought a "new" house which was built in 1939 and has numerous "projects" still in process. For example, the bathroom on the main floor is connected directly to the laundry room. There is no door in between, but the laundry room itself has a door - so you can shut the door to the laundry room to have privacy. However, my dog is not allowed in the bathroom because he chews on everything, drinks out of the toilet, and licks the inside of my daughter's training potty (EW). So we put this gate between the laundry room and bathroom to separate the two. The doorway is just drywall - it doesn't have wood like the doorway in the photo. BUT the gate still works great and doesn't damage the drywall in anyway. We did install the cups for better stability - we tried without the cups, and it wobbled. We would have to tighten the gate so much that the gap would shorten too much and the gate part wouldn't work properly. With the cups installed, it's very stable and everything works great. We also are going to install the other gate in the kitchen doorway which DOES have wood around it like the one in the photo - to keep our daughter out while we're cooking and to keep the dog in when we leave. We'll probably install the cups for this gate as well. All in all, this is a very sturdy gate but I do recommend you use the cups. They provide more stability and ease the mind. My daughter and my dog run into the gates all the time and nothing happens. The gate mechanism is fairly easy to use as well. I've only had the gate up for 2 days and I can already open and close it one-handed. My dog chews on it and it hasn't scratched the paint. The gate is also much taller than I expected (I'm 5'4" and it comes up to my collar bone) which is great because the dog can jump over the standard height gates. The gate opening is kinda small, so if you're a large person or have large people in your house or large people who visit, it might be a problem depending on how often they will need to go between rooms. I am average sized and I have to walk through the gate at a slight angle to avoid hitting the opening sides with my arms/shoulders. I am extremely happy with these gates and I recommend them to everyone with kids or pets! (WARNING: make sure that you periodically check the pressure of the gate. I check mine every couple days because normal use can cause the gate to loosen slightly.)
Regalo Gate
We purchased gate to keep 3 cats out of bedroom and 1 dog (cocker spaniel) inside of bedroom. (Cats aren't crazy about the dog). We've only had the gate for a little more than a week. It was easy to assemble, according to boyfriend, and appears to be fairly sturdy, although it has begun to squeak after only 10 days. We can't put screws into the door frame (we live in a co-op), so we put double-sided sticky tape on the door frame. This has made the gate less likely to dislodge from the frame. So far, none of the cats or dog have attempted to knock it over or jump over gate. The bars are close enough so that none of the cats; including the smallest cat can squeeze through. It is easy to open and since there are no small children in the home, locking the gate is not necessary, making it very easy to operate with one hand. My only suggestion would be for the gate to swing shut. It does reduce the amount of space to walk through, but so far this has not been a problem.
The idea of this gate is great. However, we have a pretty standard stairway and the gate is too small we have to unscrew the tighteners so much that if you bump it a little it falls over. If we put the addition on, it is WAY too big. I got this gate for my miniature pinscher and he can fit right through the sides of the gate so we had to put 2x4's in where we had to loosen the screws so that he couldn't fit through. Also the handle is inconvenient. Its good for kids because it's kind of tricky for children, but when you have arms full of groceries it is very annoying.
It’s definitely as tall as they say it is. We put it up and took it right back down thought. You have to tighten it a ton for it to be even slightly stable. Our toddler would have pulled it over in a heart beat, or we would have had holes in the doorway. Returning, or at least trying to.
Not as good as I had hoped
I needed this gate because it is the tallest one I can find on the market. I have a cat and I'm moving in with a roommate with two dogs, one of which is a jumper. I read great reviews about this gate stopping large dogs, such as huskies and german shepherds so I wanted to give it a try. As someone previously mentioned, if you tighten the screws to fit in the door frame, the gate itself won't open. In order to open the gate, you have to loosen the screws, but then you run into the problem of it not being stable and it can be easily pushed down by a 40-lb dog. As reference, I'm using it for an area that is 30in wide, so it's well within the range of this gate. I'm going to try mounting it with screws into the door frame to see if that will fix the problem.
The only gate that keeps ninja-dog out!
Our dog is a ninja genius and has managed to manipulate every gate/blockade that we tried to keep her out of the room where the kittie's food and litter is. Not only was is a mess to clean up, but she was turning into a little sausage! We bought the Regalo gate and at first, she was able to get through it too, but once I drilled it into the door frame (like it suggests on the instructions) she has been stumped! The gate works wonderfully and it is very easy for humans to open and close. If you have older cats, it might be difficult for them to jump over (it is definitely tall!) but we keep a kitty tower next to the gate on the inside of the room so they are able to use it as a stepping stone/ launch pad. Everyone is happy now and pudge-muffin is finally back down to her normal size.
A great gate for an active puppy.......
The first gate I ordered had a break in one of the cross members (a faulty joining process). `Returned it, got a refund, and ordered another one. The replacement works great and is high enough (41"} to keep my Jack Russel puppy from jumping over it. The gate door works easily and latches securely too. The puppy has tried valiantly to get through and over it, but to no avail. `Gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I got a "lemon", but I`m happy now.
Great gate but....
I loved this gate but realized it was to small in entrance way walking through if you are a big person this gate is not recommended. they do come in extra wide and are perfect I haven't seen the extra wide on Walmart site but I did find them elsewhere and purchased 3 and Love em. don't get me wrong just I am a bigger lady with a belly and it didn't work out well until I bought the wide ones, wish Walmart would carry them same brand just wider entrance opening to walk through. Oh and it is easy assemble on all these types gates.
Very Useful with Pets and Babies...
I really liked this gate because it is extra tall, and the slots are not spaced too big or too small. It was also very helpful with keeping the pets where they should be, especially at mealtimes. The only thing negative that I have to say would be that it was really rigorous to set it up, and the opening in the gate is not very wide at all. But I would still buy more for around the house!
useful product
this gate, worked out great for us, we got it to contain our new pup. The instructions were not helpful we had to figure it out without them, but once we got it up it works great. Don't recomend this gste for a pups under 4lbs. though, they can squeeze through the bars. After the puppy gets bigger the gate worked great for us.
