Our last dual compartment can (different model - butterfly open/equal size compartments) was damaged in our recent military PCS. The 46L that we chose to replace it is great - the larger recycling side has made it much more functional for how we sort trash. Plus the relatively compact profile, the smooth open and close, and the easy to clean surface are all wonderful features! We added decals to the lid to designate trash/recycling for visitors, which was a confusion point with our last can. Looks stylish and is very functional in our kitchen.

Overall it's a good trash can. I think I'm probably out of my mind for paying that much for a trash can, but we'll see if the warranty makes it worthwhile. FYI, I paid a third of the cost for one that had an electric lid, that still worked after 4 years, but for whatever reason my husband had trouble getting it to open for him. Anyway, not the point, I LOVE that I have a bigger bin for recycling and a smaller one for regular trash. We try and recycle as much as possible which means we have a larger volume, so a bigger recycling bin is great. Also, I don't like having stinky trash around for a long time, so a smaller trash bin allows me to take it out more often. I also love that the bins come out independently. The only problem I have is the lid doesn't really close flush, which attracts fruit flies. Not big enough that they get in, but still a problem.

Our first trash can came with a dimple or bump in the it and I called and you sent out a new one. And told us to keep the old one which was very nice. The second one came with two dents or bumps in it. And the lid on the trash can will not go all the way up unless you push it.

I was so excited for this trash can when ordering it, but my hatred for the tiny space for the actual trash has trumped it all. I love the larger space for the recycling but come on! We all need a little more space for the trash. We've only had it for 3 days and I'm already so beyond frustrated with this thing! I've had to take out the little trash just about every day and we only have one little one, I can't imagine a family of 4 or 5. I can't even empty out my vacuum canister without dirt getting everywhere because the canister is bigger than the tiny trash receptacle!

Unfortunately the garbage section of this can is too small. In simple terms the "mouth" of the area for regular garbage is too small and makes it difficult to "throw away" trash easily. The garbage area is long (HT) and narrow so a good deal of space is wasted when you throw away larger items. The larger items block smaller items to go past them. You end up with what I will call a lot of "air pockets" In general I LOVE simplehuman garbage cans. This particular one is not practical or functional.

The design and ease of the compartments are great the seamless fit of the bags is impressive . Unfortunately the Steel is not as tough as I thought. My toddler hit it with a soft plastic golf club and dented It on the curved part which should be the strongest area. I’ve learned to ignore that dent. Otherwise it’s a good product

I wish the two compartments were the same size, the trash side is too small and the recycle is huge. Thought about using the larger compartment for trash but the smaller one can barely take a lettuce box and a couple of cans. Ended up selling it to a friend and bought a different one, which I have some thoughts on as well..

I love this product as in encourages us to recycle more than we throw away. That is because the compartment for trash is much smaller than the one for recyclables. The only thing I don’t like about this is that it’s poorly designed. For a company that seems to only hire industrial designers who are former art center car designers and require a masters degree, I guess I expected more from the design. This clearly shows in their product and it’s lack sense when it comes to a user friendly approach. The cans are not a universal configuration, that’s the first annoyance, second is that there are no great handles to hold each can by, making it a very annoying product when taking out the garbage. Besides that, it does have a nice aesthetic when it comes to the step on the bottom. However, all the random form development seems a bit fussy and unnecessary.

I was excited about this can as I have a small kitchen and don’t have enough room for two separate cans. However, the recycle compartment is smaller than I had expected. I tried using the recycle side for my garbage, but the recycle bags are not strong for garbage. With today’s need for more recycling, I wish the compartments were at least of equal size.

When I first thought about purchasing the Simplehuman kitchen can, I wasnt sure I wanted to spend the extra money. I had no idea the difference a kitchen trash can could make. The Simplehuman can is attractive and efficient. My old plastic can was bothersome ugly and inefficient. The Simplehuman can is an addition to my kitchen, and is incredibly efficient. It is sturdy, functions smoothly, silently. I could not be more satisfied with the purchase, and happy I invested the extra money in a top quality can.
