Amazing hardware, lacking software

I'll start with the positives. I love the look of the watch. The rotating bezel for getting around is a great idea. The buttons on the side feel and respond great. I also really like having a speaker built-in for calls. I get around 3 days of battery life per charge with always on screen turned off. I do turn it off nightly so that effects battery life as well. The thing that ruined the watch for me is the software. I use my smartwatch mostly for checking notifications, responding to message and creating reminders. This is pretty difficult with the terrible S Voice voice commands. S Voice is one of the worst things about the watch. I also wished my notes and reminders from Samsung phone synced to the watch but they do not even using Samsung's apps. The 3rd party app support is also pretty bad although that isn't Samsung's fault so I won't take away starts for that.

Worth it

I had trouble finding one for a bit but finally did. It was worth it. Everything works as it should and it's a good rugged watch in general. All the other features are a bonus and work as advertised. I grew up watching shows show future tech with people talking into their watches and so on. The future is here.

Close but not there yet

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been a lover of watches most of my adult and adolescent life, for me a watch is also a sort of status symbol, practical jewellery. I wanted a watch that looked the business and was packed with the latest tech for outdoor activities, gym sessions and day to day life .... The Samsung Gear S3 Frontier was the one i wanted. With a weighty expensive feel to it, it was just like holding one of my Omega Seamasters for the first time. The strap, although made of rubber felt nice to the touch and most of all capable of taking a bit of stick from the elements and rough activities. Simple and quick to master and pair to your smartphone, Samsung’s usual slick compatibility. The Samsung Gear S3 looks the part, military style with its sinister matt black bezel and glossy body. Capable of swapping straps over you could get the perfect look you wanted with ease. The problem is, and it is a big problem, is that most of the apps so far, for me are pointless. There are not enough apps for this device at this time. Also the Samsung Gear S3 show piece is supposed to be the fact that it can look like a automatic style watch with hands etc...... but it doesn't. It looks like a watch face on a LCD screen, too bright and not sharp enough. i have downloaded loads of faces and none of them look good. The only ones that work are the digital ones, they work very well, but not what i wanted from this watch. Overall this watch is not what it wants to be, nor what I wanted it to be. It is not a smart watch that can compete with high end looks of a traditional face , its just not there yet, and that’s a shame as it had the opportunity to crack open a market that the others couldn't. #insidersgears3

Well done Samsung!!!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] What a beauty!!! I love the Samsung Gear S3!!! The watch nearly ticks all the boxes and haven't seen any that does. So far the Gear S3 has met my expectations. It has great battery life and all the features I want from a smartwatch. Well done Samsung!! I can't wait to see what you have in store for future smartwatches!!!

Good but needs improvement.

It is a great piece of equipment. It syncs your watch to your phone, but does not sync Samsung pay to it. Have to input each credit or debit card separately again. Does not stay lit all the time, so you have to press the button to view time. Does not have a separate charging system, so if you travel out of your place of residence for over 4 to 5 days of travel, you have to carry the charging dock with you.

Amazing watch!

I have owned this watch about a month now and have yet to find anything I don't like about it. In fact, the more I learn about how to use it, the more I am impressed. I would definitely recommend this watch if you are looking for a smartwatch that does it all. I have a Samsung phone that it is pared with so all the features work just the way they are supposed to. And it looks great too! I've been waiting for a smartwatch that actually looks like a watch I would wear.

Happy but

I've had the watch for a couple of months, it's replacing a Fitbit Surge. It's easy to use and has many customizable screens and settings. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the heart rate monitor. I used my Surge to train in target heart rate zones, and the Gear will at times fluctuate wildly on the heart rate. I once saw it go as high as 210 bpm.

Fantastic bit of kit

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] From the moment I opened the box I could tell this was a quality product. The packaging has been well designed and looks very classy, something that Samsung do extremely well. The Samsung Gear S3 that I tested was the Classic. This is a big watch that really makes a statement when you wear it. Make no mistake, people will notice this watch so be prepared to show it off. The Classic has a silver bezel and a black leather strap and oozes quality. Also in the box is a charging stand. No cables to plug into your watch. You simply place it in the stand and it charges. The watch face even rotates so that you can easily see the time. Set up was incredibly easy with my Samsung Galaxy S7. I had already downloaded the app and it was as simple as turning on the watch, opening the app and hey presto it's done! It's then decision time. What watch face to choose? There are literally hundreds available, some free and some which cost. The watch face is downloaded through the app on your phone and then it is sent to the watch. A number of faces can be stored on the watch so you can change it to suit your mood. There are a number of apps available specifically for the watch and accessing these on the watch is via another nifty bit of design, the rotating bezel. You can of course use the touch screen as well. I compared this to the latest Garmin watch owned by a friend and watching them fiddle with buttons to access the features really made me appreciate the Gear S3. Of course it has all of the features you'd expect and some maybe you wouldn't. A heart rate monitor, step tracker, altimeter and barometer. The list goes on. All of the health and exercise data is synced with the Samsung S-health app (if you use it). Overall this is a great looking watch with lots of useful apps which I have been wearing and using since it arrived. Samsung have definitely hit the mark with this watch making it a rival to all others on the market.

Would it be the best SMart Watch on the market?

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is good piece of kit although not for everyone. Some will find it difficult to justify high price, but some will find it very valuable and helpful. I’ve used mine for few weeks now and I’ve got mixed fillings. Let’s start with the benefits. For me (engineer working at heights), the best function is a built-in speaker and microphone. I don’t have to reach for my phone to receive or make a call. Great! It can be very handy whilst driving as well. The same with notifications, messages, email etc. Reminders, calendar and other similar feature known from smartphone are good but you will still mostly set up your reminders and appointments on the phone. It’s just easier on the bigger screen, but notifications popping up on your wrist are a good thing. There are certain aspects of the phone you can control via the watch like sound level, music and video. Additionally you can control the camera via the 3rd party app and probably much more I didn’t discovered yet. Not bad. I like to be gently waken up by the vibrating watch with no sound whatsoever. If you need a little bit more, then full volume will wake up most of the people. I don’t really us all the things like weather widget, news feed etc. but they are there if you need them. I’m enjoying using S Health app. It automatically recognises your activity, constantly monitoring your heart rate and movement. It takes few minutes to recognise the “workout” and it’s not always accurate but gives you a new perspective on how active you are. Nice bonus of this new “smart” technology. It will even remind you to get up and stretch when you seating steady for too long. It automatically tracks your sleep patterns and can be paired with the mobile apps to get even more insight in to your night. To Aps then. I didn’t install many aps or widgets so far but you can find anything from new watch faces, through aps from various categories like: finance, lifestyle, social networking, entertainment, utilities, etc. ending with the games. Yes! You can play games on it! Having said that, the choice is not grate at the moment. There are tens, maybe hundreds of apps, some free some paid, but it’s still early days for smartwatches. More will definitely come in the future. Design wise – it is a good-looking watch. I’ve been testing the Classic version and I have to say it’s not my personal style. It looks very good, shiny, with the leather strap etc.

Easy to work & read

From being a doubter I'm quickly becoming hooked. Being able to go out in the yard and still get messages and notifications via WiFi with the phone safely inside the house is a big plus. I have rather small wrists but the watch does not "overhang". I did buy a thinner metal watch band because I couldn't button my cuffs over the standard rubber watch band. It was very thoughtful that Samsung included both a small & a large band with the watch. Since they are so easy to change, I might go back to the standard band now that it is short sleeve weather.
