I was cooking and got a lot of smoke in house and noticed this alarm never went off. I actually took this thing and held it over the flame on my gas stove and it was starting to melt before it went off. I was only about 4 or 5 inches from the flame. I would not want my life to depend on this.
Hello. It is true that for this alarm to go off, enough smoke has to pool on the ceiling to fill the ceiling and flow into the vents that are on back side edges of the alarm and fill the inside of the alarm with smoke. Those vents on the front of the smoke alarm are just for sound. However, this is a safety product and we don't want to guess what happened. Please call us with this alarm in hand at 1-800-880-6788 so we can get this alarm back for investigation at our cost to see exactly what the alarm is doing.
Lasted 3 years
Only lasted 3 out of the 10 years. One night it started sounding the alarm. We jump out of bed and by the time we get to the alarm, it stops?! Go back to bed. 30 minutes later it starts again and we couldn’t get it to stop. There was no smoke or carbon monoxide. We were forced to deactivate it. I would not purchase this item again seeing all the same reviews stating the same issue.
Hello. It sounds like some dust or debris or an insect got into the smoke chamber of the alarm and the alarm mistook the debris for smoke. It is possible that vacuuming out the alarm around the back side edges of the alarm very thoroughly with the hose attachment of a vacuum cleaner or blowing out the alarm with a can of compressed air like keyboard cleaner around the back side edges very thoroughly might have flushed out any debris and restored the alarm to working. We recommend cleaning out all of your smoke alarms at least every 6 months to a year and at this point we would recommend cleaning out all of your other alarms as well as a preventative. <br /><br />If this doesn't resolve the issue, call us at Kidde Safety at 1-800-880-6788 with the alarm itself in hand and let us see what we can do for you.
Expensive, lasted 5 mons, goes off for no reason,
The hush button wouldn't hush it, after about 30-50 sec would shut off and then start up again on its own. After 2 cycles of this non sense it stopped. 12 hours later did the same thing again. It has a mind of its own. We pulled it down and put a pillow over it because you never know when it will act up. You can not open it to remove the battery to shut the thing off. I purchased on a whim and regret not researching it first. As this product has had numerous poor reviews. Purchase 5 and half mons ago and it supposed to last 10 Yrs. Buyers Beware

BUYER BEWARE!!! JUNK
I installed this 4 days ago. It starting going off no smoke in the house so I sailed 911 thinking it was CO2. Fire department came. NO CO2 reading in the house!!!! Moved the alarm to fresh air, still didn't stop going off. Had to disable it which makes it no longer to be used. Lucky Sam's took it back. I don't like the option "no batteries" DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL!!!

Have you done any renovations lately or anything that might have brought up a lot dust? Have you had any issues lately with small insects? Is there anything blowing a lot of air and therefore a lot of debris through the alarms? This is my second one where it started going off for no reason after about a year. The turn off screw did not work. I had to hit it with a hammer at 3AM to get it to stop. Do not buy!

I have had two of these smoke detectors and both starting going off without stopping both times after I have had them for about 4 months. I exchanged the first one and the latest one will be returned. I will not be purchasing another.

Went off for no reason and would not reset
The alarm went off as a smoke detector and would not reset when I took it out to fresh air. It went off for no reason and would not stop. Returned it for another. I will post if I have a problem with the identical replacement.
