I didn't try without, but I'm sure that you can use without any shaving cream and it'll work just fine with water. Although the stand comes in handy, I didn't really use it.

Super smooth shave, sharp blades, leaves my skin silky smooth. Love the updated design - slick, modern, chic. Also comes with a magnetic stand, which looks great and keeps the blades protected. I was a long-time fan of Mach-3 (among other brands) though after receiving a Gillette Labs as a gift there is no going back. The exfoliating bar keeps my skin silky and moist and the 5 Gillette blades w/ 2D Flexdisc perfect cut at any angle.
