If black residue is seen inside the Opal Ice Maker (including hoses and tanks), it can be caused by mineral build-up in the machine. Even with filtered water, minerals come through that will build up over time. You're right about how awesome the SmartHQ app is - it really does provide some very helpful information and gives you a lot of control! We do apologize that the bin doesn't keep the ice cold.
