Turbo Tax is a helpful software to do your taxes.

Confusing on some questions within the software to specific forms and answers to questions. Could be more detailed on instructions for filling out some forms. Also, not easy to contact for a quick specific question as the help online search doesn't get you to the answer, when you need to ask a specific question of a real person.

Conversion of a primary residence is not easy

I purchased the Premier version since it is supposed to take care of investment rental properties. It does not handle a conversion of a primary residence very well. The issue wsa the partial year as home vs. rental. Clunky interface and I ended up working around the system to set it up as if it were a newly purchased property. Improvement is needed to make things easier.

Getting More Cumbersome Intentionally?

This year just seemed very different. Wasn't a fan of the push for live experts/assistants -- nice that they're offered, but the prompts that say, "I'll do this later," seemed over the top -- how about an option that says, "no thanks" (meaning not interested).

BUG matching 529 withdrawals non-tuition expenses

Using TT is clear & the coverage is comprehensive. I've been using it for 10+ years so I'm very familiar with it. The low rating is for a bug in the education deduction section where the 1099-Q from a 529 plan is not properly matched against non-tuition expenses (room, board, etc.) so the 529 ends up partially taxed. I found out about the bug when I submitted my redacted (SSNs removed) tax return to Google Gemini AI, which also suggested a workaround. I confirmed in the Community forums that the bug was acknowledged in February and an update was released in March which did NOT fix the bug. Community posts also recommended the workaround that Gemini did. I will use TT again next year, but I will definitely be running its results through whatever AI I'm using then.

TurboTax Must Improve

The interface with the user could use significant improvement. For example, I did not discover what the system requirements for 2025 were until I tried to download after purchasing the software. Why not include SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS on the box— as many software companies do? At the end when customers are filing, saving, printing, the header states HERE'S HOW TO SAVE YOUR FILE. Below that the only link is PRINT RETURN. There is NO SAVE FILE AS PDF link! Nuts!! Most people are sufficiently stressed by the mere act of completing their taxes. Don't add to the stress by forcing people to guess what they need to do for such simple processes as saving the file. Your software is uposedly focused on average people completing their taxes, not technology nerds.

Glitch City

A lot of glitches for tax year 2025. Multiple times the application would launch and then quit, not opening without restarting computer. Consistently attempted to add Canadian fund information even when indicating "no" to living anywhere outside of USA. In past versions, updates were frequent but this one had maybe one or 2 and then nothing (updates seemingly necessary, see above). Frustrating.

IMPORT PROBLEMS!

I found importing data from brokerage firms was very confusing, difficult and frustrating. The steps necessary were different from years past. As data was imported and additional accounts were imported previous imports were identified as duplicates and actually, they were not.

Not ready by 15-Jan for estimated taxes

I've been using Turbo Tax for over 20 years now, but this was the first year that the program was unable to help with calculating estimated taxes by 15-Jan-26. I'm retired, and I usually put my final estimates of my taxes in before 15-Jan so I can get a rough idea of my total tax liability and make sure my final estimated tax payment is correct, but this year Turbo Tax had many sections that were not ready, including rental property, capital gains, etc.

Some ups and downs with entry format

I didn't care for the format changes made this year, as I was used to the previous format and the new step-through entry process kept making me feel that I missing things. Found myself going back to recheck entries. Also import from my e*Trade account never worked as I have a 2-step verification and it kept telling me that info returned from the institution said that I was entering incorrect login/password info. I was able to log in via my cell, so I knew that my entries were accurate.

data entry

changes to software this year make manual entries for interest and dividends very cumbersome. Entries should be separate. Always returns you to top of list. Import screen is always first. there should be fewer "clicks" to make manual entries. Even deleting an entry from last year that has $0 this year is difficult
