I didn't try without, but I'm sure that you can use without any shaving cream and it'll work just fine with water. Although the stand comes in handy, I didn't really use it.

It took me forever to get everything out of the box and I was then left with a huge pile of cardboard. The razor itself is quite nice but no improvement over my Fusion razor.
