When I bought a memory foam mattress to replace our regular king-sized mattress some years ago -- the cost was enough that I cheaped out and used our old frame and split box spring rather than a platform type recommended. It seemed to be "fine" -- and truthfully, it's such a pain to move everything that I just kept it despite the fact that the box spring would sometimes spread/split, the old frame (which can adjust from full to king) design is horrendous and weak, the legs would stub toes at the corners, the ends could impale your shin, the casters would sometimes come off, and the space underneath is practically useless and nearly impossible to vacuum.
Eventually, what was "fine" really wasn't. Regular box springs really don't provide the correct support for memory foam-type mattresses -- and it began to show. Worse, the frame was decidedly evil: one shouldn't have to put blocks of wood under the legs when casters fail, pool noodles around sharp parts, or roll to one side when it suddenly splits.
Enter this frame: I found this and finally decided to bite the bullet.
I have to admit, I dreaded its arrival as much as looked forward to it. I imagined the removal of the box springs, disassembling the old frame, putting this together and I am pretty lazy. Frankly, I didn't even know if I would be able to carry this into the house -- let alone up the stairs into the bedroom. I decided to put off worry about it since it had a 2-week estimated delivery time -- but it came much faster; in less than a full week from placing the order via Fed Ex.
The box is packed very well -- it's a large square and weighs about 50 pounds. I could lift it myself -- however, because my arm span in short (I am 5'4), it was very awkward because it is difficult to get a good hold. My Zoomer son had absolutely no issues and easily carried it alone up two flights of stairs while making fun of me for being short. That earned him the privilege of carrying out the old box springs. :-) Two able-bodied short humans could easily carry this, or one able-bodied taller Zoomer alone while giving snarky retorts. All but the tightest of places should have no problems with maneuvering it.
Assembling it took 10 minutes, and the majority of that time was spent disposing of the packing materials and listening to my skeptical Zoomer question how a metal frame would be more comfortable than a padded box spring. Once it was together and the mattress was on, we both laid on it to test it out -- and it was amazing. Not only was the difference in comfort astounding -- he admitted that he was wrong -- which we now call "The Miracle of the SmartBase Platform Bed" and made it a yearly holiday.
It is a perfect height. It is wonderful to be able to store things and clean under it. I was worried I would need to buy the separate piece sold by this company to attach it to my surrounding headboard (it stands alone as it has two wardrobes attached) -- but this is so sturdy and solid that I don't need it. After several nights, it is indescribable the difference made in the comfort level. In fact, my bed is so comfortable, it even lured the very same Zoomer away from gaming to lay on the bed to watch some TV with me. This is the "Second Miracle of the SmartBase Platform Bed"
I would recommend this base to anyone.
