Individually wrapped

We have been buying Sam's tabs for at least 10 years and have very good success with them. If you keep your water balanced and at the right ph levels, your tabs will work beautifully. We have an automatic chlorinating system and we usually keep about 8 to 10 tabs that last 5 to 6 days depending on the amount of sun and how high we set the dial. No one has ever had a reaction to the tabs or other chemicals in our pool. For the price, we highly recommend. Perhaps others have just gotten a bad bucket?

May work initially, problems will come later

PLEASE read this review all the way through. I like saving money and I buy lots of Sams and Members Mark products. Pool chemicals shouldn’t be one of them though. Here’s why - The total active ingredient (chlorine) is much lower than better name brand tablets. Your thought process may be like mine - “just use more and with the $ savings it’s still cheaper”. The problem is with how much stabilizer, or CYA (cyanuric acid$ you’re putting in your pool. All pools need about 30-50 ppm CYA, or the sun will eat up your chlorine. Too much CYA and your chlorine becomes ineffective. Think of CYA like sunscreen.....you want a tan but you don’t want to burn. Don’t use any and you burn, use too much and you can’t tell you’ve been in the sun. CYA protects the chlorine around when it’s around the 30 ppm level, but once it gets over 50+, you have to start using more chlorine for it to be active and work. These tablets are low on active chlorine, but very high on stabilizer (CYA). We used these for a season and it worked fine initially, but had to start adding more tablets each week to prevent algae. I started researching and discovered the CYA piece. Bought a test kit that measured CYA and we were over 200 ppm. Normal chlorine levels are around 4-6 ppm, but with our CYA over 200, we had to use three times as much chlorine for it to be effective, and this led to adding even more CYA since it’s so highly concentrated in these tablets. CYA doesn’t go away, you have to drain your pool and refill with fresh water to get your CYA level back. I learned the hard way and spent lots of money on pool chemicals because of this. I also spent lots of time and money partially draining my pool a few times to get the CYA level where it needed to be.

Not impressed

Bought these a month ago and thought we were getting a good deal.. Well, we got a good deal in the price, but not on quality.. It takes double the amount of tabs than any other brands I have used and have now ran into an algae issue I'm fighting all of the sudden after using these brand of tabs, definitely will not use these again..

Changed product formulation -- no good now

The chlorine tabs sold at Sam's used to be stabilized (contained CYA) and worked great for years for me. The last batch I bought (this product) no longer has stabilizer in it and I did not notice that. My stabilizer levels dropped to nil, which I finally figured out when trying to deal with stubborn cloudiness in the water. Now with CYA where it needs to be, and monitoring the water every day, I can't get chlorine levels up where they should be, no matter how high I turn up the feeder. Not sure what the problem is regarding that, but am switching to a brand from my local pool supply company.

Very little chlorine content.

I can put two of these in my chlorinator and the pool test extremely low chlorine. Both have dissolved in three days. I've used only these in the past, and during summer months I only needed 1 every five days for normal chlorine levels. Maybe I got a bad batch, but for 200$ I expected better.

Great Product if Used Correctly!

Pool guy here. This product contains trichloro-s-triazinetrione (i.e. trichlor) which is a pool sanitizer that releases chlorine into your pool water for the purpose of killing bacteria and preventing algae from forming. Trichlor is designed to be used in freshwater and saltwater pools - and pools having vinyl and gunite surfaces. TriChlor tablets have an available chlorine content of about 90% which is quite good when compared to other pool sanitizers such as Cal-Hypo and Sodium Dichlor. Trichlor tablets also contain something called CYA or cyanuric acid which acts as a stabilizer or conditioner that helps protect the chlorine in your pool water from being burned off by the sun. This is a very important feature to know about. Without CYA in your pool water, most of your chlorine will quite literally disappear in a day or less. On the downside, excess levels of CYA will accumulate in your pool water over time as more Trichlor tablets are added. When the CYA level gets above a certain limit (100ppm+), the chlorine in your pool starts to become less effective. This will continue until no amount of chlorine added will be able to disinfect your pool. This is commonly referred to as 'chlorine lock'. The only way to reduce the amount of CYA in your pool water is by partially draining and refilling the pool with fresh water. Please understand, there are many different physical and chemical aspects involved in keeping your pool water clean, clear and safe. Anyone can "shock" their pool. But it takes an understanding of your entire pool environment to effectively treat and maintain your pool safely and economically. Just as important as balancing your pool water chemistry is to ensure your pool water circulation and filtration systems are setup and working correctly. You can have a pool whose water chemistry is perfectly balanced (free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid, calcium, etc) are all within spec. But if your pool pump isn't circulating your pool water properly, your pool will in all likelihood turn green in a matter of days. The same is true for having an ineffective filtration system. If you pool filter hasn't been properly serviced, your filter will get jammed up with bacteria that will contaminate your perfectly balanced and circulating pool water. If you find yourself in a situation of not knowing what you should do, I suggest calling a 'good' pool guy in your area. Ask your neighbors who to call - or who NOT to call! And have him or her come out to help get your pool squared away. And with time, you can start taking over the maintenance and management of your own pool should you decide to do so. My two cents!
