When ice is added, the texture changes, the liqueur becomes more viscous. Lusciously sweet, very pleasant, soft, warming, but not scalding, as in the case of classic rum. I like it in its pure form as well, with or without ice. Although it is recommended to be chilled to 10 degrees. Everyone's tastes and preferences are different on this one. This is my go to rum and I love it! I'm not into super strong liquor, and this is the perfect balance between being strong enough but not too strong. I can drink it straight but really enjoy mixing it with fruit juices (mainly pineapple and/or orange).

I not sure about alternatives I never used any other. I am not a beer drinker so this is good for me. I haven't been to a restaurant or bar that didn't have ot.
