It really challenges you to use your imagination and there is the slight bit of gentle violence when you get to hit someone with the NO! Stick. And that makes everyone laugh and have even that much more fun! It’s simple, but uses your creativity and it’s easy to get everyone involved for a fun game night.

Have you ever played the game, “Exploding Kittens”? If so, you know how fun and fast moving it is! Well the makers did it again with “Poetry for Neanderthals”! Think Taboo, but instead of a buzzer, you get hit with a “NO!” inflatable bat! Yes, your children will love this game and probably be paying super close attention so they can watch for any mistakes you may make. You can play with just a few people or a big group-it’s super simple and tons of fun! It’s great for exercising your brain with quick

This game was so much fun for the whole family! The challenge of only speaking in one syllable words was engaging while also being scared of being caught breaking the rules due to the person in charge of the inflatable “no” stick. We were laughing nonstop.

There are plenty of cards to be able to play without repeating any cards. Set up is just a minute of so so that you can start the game quick. If is hilarious to hear everyone speak in such simple words or sentences. We laugh throughout every game we have played!

Poetry for Neanderthals is really fun to play and actually challenging when you can only use 1 syllable words as descriptors. We now play this quite frequently especially if we have guests. Everyone that has played it with us has nothing but positive reviews of it. Of course the kids love to 'bonk' others with the 'No' club, and I have to admit that it does give me a little pleasure as well. I love to sit back and listen to others try to describe the guess word, it gets kind of funny because they begin to sound like neanderthals. If you like to laugh and have fun while playing a board game, then you should definitely give this a try. My family loves this as it has quickly became one of our favorites. The added bonus is more family time.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My kids and I throughly enjoyed playing poetry for Neanderthals. Directions were clear and easy to understand and my kids found it hilarious. My husband even had a good time and he’s hard to please when it comes to games. Would be a great game for game night with friends as well. We’ve definitely recommend it to friends.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently had the chance to try a great game called Poetry for Neanderthals. It’s a card game from the makers of Exploding Kittens. The game is for ages 7 and up and can be played with as little as two players. The idea is to use one syllable words to get your team to guess the secret phrase. If a word more than one syllable is used, you get bonked with an inflated club, known as the “No” stick. Had a great time playing this with friends and family. It made us laugh sounding like cavemen.

It’s so easy, a caveman could do it (…geico commercials, anyone? anyone?) The game play is easy to learn. Use one syllable word clues to get your team to guess the word on the card. Very similar concept to taboo or catch phrase or $25,000 pyramid or password. The twist on this game is that the clues must be only one syllable words. But in playing it ended up just saying sentences and phrases with smaller words, poor grammar, and much of the time it was easier with just calling out clue words. And instead of a taboo buzzer (…Four Christmases was such a good movie…) , you hit the person with an inflatable club with the word No on it. (Kind of like in season 1 of Family Guy and Brian hits Peter with the newspaper saying, “No!”). The kids loved the club hitting part. The box description doesn’t completely match the gameplay. In the game play people generally didn’t say parts of the word or other illegal clues, so having only one person from the other team call out when multiple syllable used, turned into everyone on the other team calling out the cluegiver. The point of sitting on alternate chairs with other team just makes for easier hitting with the club. Eventually, we rarely ended up using the club as everyone pretty much stopped using anything but one syllable words. Really, the only reason for having cards in the negative point pile was when clue giver would pass. At game end, the winning team ends up doing a Neanderthal poetry reading from their winning cards discard pile. Basically a short 3 word Mad-Lib. Typically not very funny and generally useless for gameplay. Very few of these in the box and would be more fun if they affected gameplay more and if there were more poetry cards. The game board was also pretty unnecessary. It was easy enough after each round to tally points for that team. Ultimately if playing again would just take a pack of cards and leave the rest. All in all it was fun and everyone had a good time.

I received a free sample of the game and expansion through tryazon for my review. I played this with friends and neighbors and it was fun. My SO is dyslexic and it was a bit challenging for him. It was a lot more challenging coming up with poems with words with one syllable than I thought it would be but it was fun hitting people with the no stick.
