My husband and I have for yrs looked for a train set to go around our Christmas tree. But could never find one we like or could afford. My husband passed away 3 yrs ago :*( and when I saw this train set I just had to get it. I know my husband would love it , as I do. I can't wait to set it up. It is good sized , and the detail of the cars is awesome. Tracks are tad hard to snap into place , and difficult to line the wheels up with the tracks and the couplers .. Every time I got the wheels lined up with the tracks the coupler came undone. And vice verse. But considering I have never had a train nor have I EVER, PUT ONE TOGETHER BEFORE NOW ... It only took me 30-40 mins start to finish to completely do a round configuration approx 4.5 feet by 4.5 feet. Circle nearly completely encircled my 5x7 area rug. Almost, I would love to see this going around a Christmas tree would be awesome. As it was I had fun playing with it .. SEE VIDEO. No this train does not produce steam, I see this question a lot, it is a sturdy high quality construction AND YES THAT IS TOM HANKS VOICE, AS THE CONDUCTOR of the Polar Express as in the movie. And pics great detailing in the figurines. Batteries were Not included. And the large "Sliegh" bell ornament is exactly like the silver bell given to the boy at the end. By Santa .. It is incredibly beautiful. And rings loud .. Lol when mailman brought my package to me .. You could hear it ringing from inside the shipping box load and clear.. The mail man thought I had a Santa suit or horse Bridle ! Too cute. When I was little I always wanted a train to go around my tree. It was so very nostalgic to put this together I felt like a little kid on Christmas Eve three configurations avail I did the smallest one and it very substantially large enough to go around a large tree. Awesome truly splendid!

Another person mentioned that the batteries were not included. Should have listened to that review. Son put together but unable to run because the batteries were not included and he did not have any.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am thrilled to have this train. It is modeled after the train in the Christmas movie "The Polar Express". It is a full sized train, G scale. It comes with the engine, coal car, and two passenger cars. It has no caboose, but I have added that on my own. This train has a plastic track, and is battery operated, 6 C cells or 1 9 volt to run the train and 2 AA for the remote. When my children were young, I had an electric train that was put around the Christmas tree, but I was always afraid of something catching fire or one of the children getting shocked. Not a problem with this train, and I really like that. My five year old grandson love this train. He has learned to put the train on the tracks and run it. I never let that happen with my old electric train, so the young children always had to have someone run the train for them. The train is now back in its box. It stores very well in the box it came in. Once opened you can't trust the handle for carrying it though, the box seems to heavy for that, once it is all opened up, Could be the way I opened it, don't really know. I can't wait to see the expression on my grandsons face when he sees this train running round the Christmas tree, with the little village that will be put on the inside of the oval track. Nothing small about this train, including the fun and smiles it will bring

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a fantastic train set. It is a little large layout if you live in an apartment. It takes about a 6 foot by 5 foot area to layout the train tracks. It is larger than my first Lionel train of 60 years ago, LOL. The train is very well made of heavy plastic material as well as the sections of track. I think they will stand the test of time if taken care of properly. The G-Gauge set is larger than standard Lionel train sets but is pleasant to look at. The All aboard from the conductor sounds just like the movie and is quite fun to listen to. The whistle and bells also sound as in the movie. The C size batteries I put in lasted about 10 hours of playtime. It would have been nice if they would have had a rechargeable battery that you just plugged in but probably cost to much for everyday consumers. The Bell that was included did not sound very well hand ringing like Santa would. I think this would be a good Train set if you have the room. It will not fit on an 8ft by 4ft piece of plywood though.

I love that it is Polar Express and Lionel, makes it great for my holiday decorations. My daughter doesn't want to stop playing with this. Really great train.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this train through Walmart's Spark Review Program. I requested this for review because my husband loves Lionel trains and is particular to this brand. He only owns O-Guage which is smaller than the G-Guage. What I like about it is you really can appreciate the detail of the train because of its size.When I seen the box it made me smile because it reminds you of Christmas. Being a Polar Express train of course it looks like the train from the movie. I love the vintage look. It has such style and detail to it. You get the steam locomotive has a head lamp and sounds,. A tender (coal car);this is the car where all the C batteries go. There is an observation car with a disappearing hobo who lives on top of the car and disappears when he doesn't want to be seen. You use your finger to make him disappear. There is also a passenger car. There are twelve curved tracks and four straight tracks. You can make a circle,extended circle or an oval design track. There is also a conductor Tom Hanks figure and Billy on a snow stand. There is a large "Santa Sleigh Bell' that is from the movie that would make a great Christmas tree ornament. There is a wireless remote control. This takes 2 AA batteries. The remote has forward,stop,reverse. There is a bell and whistle buttons. There is an announcement button that says. "All Aboard". "This Is The Polar Express" The voice sounds like Tom Hanks. In order for the train to run you have to turn on the remote switch on the controller to on. The coal tender which is behind the engine has a power plug that must be inserted in the back of the engine. Then the power activation button must be pressed. This is on top of the engine. Then turn the dial on the remote to move the train. The train makes realistic sounds like chugging and brake squealing. The set comes with batteries. Unfortunately the C batteries were dead. I purchased C batteries and ran the train for over 2 1/2 hours non stop to check the battery life. You can purchase a 9.6Volt rechargeable battery if you desire. You will also have to buy a charger to charge that battery. The only issue my husband had with the train is that the coupler to connect the cars together is difficult to connect whereas the O-Guage trains just snap together. This is the first train set that I was able to run on the floor because my cats couldn't knock them over like the O-Guage trains. All in all I think this train is a wonderful edition to place around the holiday tree.

This is a good set for a child. It does take batteries, and reviews on various sites says it goes through batteries quickly. Fun and entertainment value is high. It has sounds too! There are youtube videos where you can watch train in action. There is a more expensive Lionel O gauge set for the more serious collector. Lionel site is selling with an author signed book for about $149. Other sites have this train set for less. Hopefully Walmart will adjust its price.

This is a GREAT TRAIN to start a Christmas tradition with. LARGER than Expected! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I LOVE this train and am privileged to own it. IF you are searching for a GOOD TRAIN SET, this is IT! I cannot even imagine how anyone would not be pleased with it. It's a GOOD CHOICE and will be a longtime family possession/keepsake. LOCOMOTIVE~COAL TENDER~COACH CAR~OBSERVATION CAR~TRACK~ all included with 2 people and fun feature of a hobo rising to top from inside car. 1ST, I was surprised at the SIZE of the cars. The long passenger cars alone are 13"Lx4 3/4"H. I was surprised to learn the G-Gauge train is larger than O-Gauge. The authentic detail and size of this train is VERY IMPRESSIVE. The TRACK is EASY to ASSEMBLE! They simply snap on and snap off easily, but are sturdy hard plastic. You receive 12 CURVED TRACK PIECES and 4 STRAIGHT TRACK PIECES. You have THREE TRACKS you can make. The LARGE OVAL is 72"x55" and the CIRCLE is 55" and variation of OVAL. They are all 55" W. The lg OVALS ARE LONGER. I chose the 55" circle which was easy to put together by joining all curved pieces. I can't help but SMILE when I watch it run. The remote control gives you the options of: "ALL ABOARD!", Whistle Sound, and Bell Sound. The sounds are GREAT! And, it also makes that nice "chugging" train sound as it operates. 'Fascinating to watch! It's just pure FUN! There was a 2004 MOVIE "Polar Express", starring TOM HANKS (playing multiple parts) which obviously inspired this set, making it a favorite of many. TO WATCH OUT FOR: 1) OBTAIN 6 "C" BATTERIES for Coal Car 2)OBTAIN 2 "A" BATTERIES FOR REMOTE CONTROL and importantly, PREPARE FOR A LARGE SURFACE AREA for the Train as the WIDTH is 55". You need a LARGE AREA for this impressive train. I HAD JUST 2 PROBLEMS but they were merely due to my personal situations: 1) I wanted to put it on my dining table w/my Christmas village but it is too wide for the table and 2) Since I am not that well coordinated, 'had some difficulty keeping the cars from falling off the track. But, I had it on the floor & it's easier when you place cars on track at eye-level. With patience and when you get all the cars on...they stay on and it's definitely "good to go!" It's also very easy to put all the pieces back in to its designated storage box location (w/sturdy styrofoam protection) for storing and with nice handle, the box is easy to move. With the set comes the Owner's Manual/Instructions, Warranty to activate, Free membership in "Lionel Railroader Club"application which gives Lionel discounts (can join online). Also included is info on "Lionel Collectors Club of America" est 1970. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Remember, you can also ADD PIECES, DECOR, etc. from Lionel if you desire.

Not only did the grandkids play with the train set they also played with the box....a great starter set...recommended for kids who are able to take care of their toys...
