The wood used is weak and "crumbly"

First of all, I used the "ship to store" feature to order this shelving unit....It was delivered to the wrong store! Second, the box it came in was completely beat up, torn up, and had several openings in it.....Most of the metal posts fall out of one hole as I took it to my car. Once I got it home to build, I found that the wood (around the edges of each shelf) had left particles all over my car and the box it came in. As we built the shelves, we were happy to see all the parts were still in the box. But, as we built it, the wood continued to shred around the edges and break off in our hands as we installed each wood shelf.....Needless to say, I am very disappointing in this product and the lack of care taken during shipping.

You get what you pay for

While the shelf isn't the super-durable, it is a pretty good value for the size and price one pays, and depending on the application should work just fine. It could probably hold the stated 4000 lbs if the weight were pretty evenly spaced. The frame seems pretty good, but as in many shelves of this type, particle board is used. So don't use this in an application where shelves will get wet. I'm using the shelf for a seedling starting shelf with shop lights hanging from the frame, so I may cover the shelves with plastic to avoid getting them wet. Painted particle board white to protect boards a little more (and reflect more light). So far, shelf is working quite well for this application. Note: Using the shelves as two separate shelves (side by side), so I can't comment on the stability of the shelf at full height. (There are 8 corner pieces, so to extend the shelf upwards, four of the corner pieces are stacked on the lower four and fitted into the frame.)

The two that im putting in the basement and laundry, im going to use the particle board it came with. The other four, im usiing in the garage and shed, going to replace shelving with half inch plywood.( for more strength do to humidity ). Well worth price I paid, $60. Frame worth the money

It's just OK after fully reengineering

I wouldn't trust this to hold anywhere close to the rated weight, for that it gets one star. Like everyone says, the MDF bows under medium weight. Not only does it seem like it could snap, but it minimizes the contact area supporting the shelf. If you think cutting stronger material (plywood) to replace the shelves will fix the issue; it may, but these shelves are 23.2 x 47.2 you wont find a hardware store allowed to trim such little amounts off their plywood. Muscle Rack / Edsal has different quality of the same products, this as you could imagine by the price is the "overseas" version. If you want a detailed explanation on how to fix it - read on. My first step was trying to reach Edsal. I called %26 called their support number no answer. So I submitted an online ticket. My primary goal was to get these cross or tie bars I saw mentioned in a Depot review. The CSR was very nice and shipped out 10 at no charge, but said they probably wont fit because the Depot version is different (2x price) than this "overseas" version. 1 star for their assistance. The bars came %26 like she thought, they were too long. Another review I saw made their own cross bars out of wood. So I grabbed a cheap 2x2 furring strip %26 got to work. I mitered the edges (36º) to fit in with the steel angle. This worked great. In hind sight the review did 2 per shelf which I should have done, I only did one in the center. When loading down the shelf, each side still had a little deflection. It would probably hold, but I wanted to make absolute sure before filling up every shelf. I looked for stronger shelf material, but like I said I couldn't find anyone who would cut it to the exact size. I turned to the steel cross bars Edsal provided. With a little hammering, I could flatten one end and expand out the hook to fit right over my center bar. I did this for all 5 shelves (10 bars) and now everything is very sturdy. It is important to follow the directions for shelf placement, I saw a review that had the bottom shelf way higher than the 3rd hole, this will 100% cause the legs to bend. This version doesn't include plastic ends for the metal feet. Go grab some flooring samples to stand it on, or it will cut through your carpet. I recommend anchoring it to the wall. I didn't have studs, so I used 4x 250%23 T style toggles. Make sure to use some sort of shim so its not pulling the shelf back. Also for a safety railing on the sides, Harbor Freight has 24" zip ties, which fit great if you use a pair. After all that I have about 400%23 on each shelf and it feels very sturdy. In the end it may be worth just buying a nicer shelf, but the extra work wasn't that hard.

Recommendation--With Reseravations

I have purchased several heavy duty shelf sets over the past year; most have been quality units at quite a discount. Relative to these shelves, the others are far superior. With these units, you almost need three hands in order to get the second tier installed, and the entire unit remains unstable until all of the shelf boards are installed. My two units arrived missing four of the framing rails and four of the end pieces were missing the brads necessary to install the these rails. I called the company and they were quite accommodating and promptly shipped out the missing pieces. The bottom line is you get what you pay for: if you want a quality, heavy duty shelf set, this is not the one to buy-- spend the extra $$$$s and buy quality brand. If you are looking for some 2'X4'X6' shelving and your budget can't afford the first tier shelving pricing, then these units will probably meet your needs.

Big & Sturdy

Thought it was too good to be true for such a great product at such an inexpensive cost. It arrived on time - the box corners/edges a bit mangled due to the heavy weight. This concerned us and after opening, some corners on the board shelves had broken off. We considered returning it, but after assembly, the shelves still fit perfectly and we couldn't see the missing corners. All-around, this is a cosmetically and durably sound product. Very quick and easy assembly. The dimensions were spot-on and our two shelving units fit perfectly in the garage space. It's tall, it's deep, and it's beautiful (see photo). Definitely buying more! Way to go Walmart!!

What you'd expect of a $50 shelf

These will be fine for light use. I wouldn't put them in my garage for heavy items like tools, but they are great in my storage room. The shelf part is really thin, junky chipboard, so be careful when putting it together, because they fall apart pretty easily (there were several large chunks already missing when I pulled them out of the box). I would never spend $110 (which is what the website says they are regularly), but for $50 on sale, they are great.

Love it

It feels nice and sturdy. It's bigger than I thought, which I love. The only thing I wish is that I could buy extra shelves for it. I'm using this for home canned items so I don't really need so much space between the shelves. I still really love this and will most likely be ordering another soon!

Not as pictured

I specifically purchased this shelf because it showed to have a bracket that connects The two sections vertically. I have an identical shelf with these brackets and I'm very pleased with it. The shelf I received did not include brackets in the instructions say to hold the two vertical sections together using the shelf brackets themselves. This method of assembly is very flimsy, not acceptable, and not what is pictured in the item description. I would not have purchased this shelf had I known it did not include these brackets.

Great products, pretty easy assembly.

These shelves are great. Very sturdy. They are pretty easy to setup, you just need a rubber mallet. The only hard part is the middle shelf. Just need to make sure you stack the rails correctly then they work great. In the 15 to 30 minute range for assembly. Also I had to contact support for missing and broken pieces, they were fantastic, had me parts on the way the next day! Great to have a company that stands behind their products that way. I am going to buy some more shelves from Edsal.
