When I received my LG 55C8 (one week ago), I almost returned it.
A lot of things were worse than before, compared to my previous (and way less expensive) TV.
I did find workarounds for most of them, but unfortunately I still have unresolved issues.
Here is a list of some flaws on my LG C8 and how I worked around them:
- Yellow tint:
The first thing that hit me when I switched to cinema modes was the warmer yellowish tint.
After looking on the web, I found that it was probably due to my previous TV being too "cool" or bluish. And indeed, after a few days, colors don't appear yellow to me anymore.
- Weird stutter/artifacts while gaming:
This one is very common, just disable "True Motion" setting.
- Crushed black on PS4 (dark places are too dark):
This one was bad, I almost returned my TV when I encountered it while playing Sekiro.
It seems like the PS4 and the C8 don't know how to talk to each other. Again, the fix is easy: just turn RGB range to "Limited" in your PS4 settings.
- Blurry text on Nintendo Switch:
I don't know why but my previous TV did a much better job at upscaling low-res content.
This is really noticeable on texts. For example on the Nintendo Switch home screen, font characters are very blurry while it looked like high-res/vector text on my previous TV. I don't have pictures to show you because I sold my previous TV, but the difference is like night and day.
When I increase the "Sharpness" setting a little, this is less noticeable but still not perfect.
I don't know how to fix this, unfortunately.
- Bright subtitles on HDR content:
I am French and don't speak English fluently so when I watch a movie, I watch it with subtitles.
The thing is, with HDR/Dolby Vision movies, subtitles are way too bright.
There is a workaround for Netflix (decreasing the font opacity), but this is not ideal because it makes subtitles too dim on SDR content so I'm forced to tweak subtitles each time I switch from SDR to HDR.
What really sucks is that some apps don't provide a way too tweak subtitles, so I can't use them to watch HDR content.
This is a shame because I bought a lot of movie on Rakuten.tv and can't watch them on my new TV because they automatically turn on HDR and there is no way to disable HDR on the LG C8 (!).
Result: I have a TV capable of providing a near perfect image but can't use it because subtitles blind me.
Do not get me wrong, the overall picture quality is stunning, but at this price, I didn't expect this kind of flaws.
Online reviews are unanimous and I was really surprised when I received it.
I think I would have bought an other TV if someone had told me I that I could not watch my HDR movies with subtitles on a C8.
