[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received my Food Saver in the mail quickly after ordering. I could tell by the box itself that there were many features with this unit, and I knew I would have to read every part of the manual to understand all of the cool things I could do with this Food Saver. My sister has a Food Saver and when we house sit for her, we are always bummed that every box of crackers, bag of potato chips had been resealed, but now I know why! I am so excited for the many ways I can save food and other items with this new gadget.
After unboxing, I plugged the unit in and followed instructions on how to install the roll of Food Saver wrap. I honestly didn't know you can create your own bags - I thought the unit would only seal bags, but I was so excited to roll the plastic forward, seal it, roll it out and then cut it to make a bag, also sealing the bottom of the next bag for future use. Such a smart little machine! Directions were easy to follow to finish this process.
I tested the unit out first on some frozen chicken that I was using for freezer meals. I filled the bag I had made with chicken and marinade, then enjoyed watching the Food Saver suck the air out and then seal my bag of chicken.
The machine comes with a "marinator" tool that pulls out from the top of the machine, and is used for Food Saver bags and containers. The marinator is placed over the vent on the bag or container, and the machine will pulse the vacuum I guess to marinate the juices into the food? I haven't tried this feature yet, and I was unable to find much about it in the instruction manual. It tells how to do it, but not what the benefit is or what kind of food this feature is helpful for. As a complete beginner, I will have to probably jump on YouTube and see how others are using this tool, because it sounds neat.
There is a drip tray in the unit, which is a nice feature because it is possible that there will be some liquid extracted from juicy foods with all of that vacuuming. I didn't have anything in the tray the time I used it for chicken and marinade.
My favorite use for the machine has been to reseal bags from chips, crackers and other snacks. It is so nice to have a nicely closed bag of chips every time we open them. My son LOVES sealing the bags before putting them back in the cabinet - and this is the kid who could not for the life of him remember to put a chip clip on a bag. So there is a fun element to the machine for kids, too.
One unexpected use I found for the Food Saver came into my head when I was heading out to the beach. I like to take my crochet projects everywhere I go, but don't like having the pattern papers flying around or getting wet at the beach or pool. I put my pattern sheet in a sheet protector, put it in the Food Saver, hit "Seal" and viola! A waterproof crochet pattern that was protected on all sides. I will actually be using this feature instead of expensive laminating for things like patterns and even school projects.
All in all, I am so glad I now have this Food Saver. I hope to find more features and uses for it in the future, but so far in the first two weeks of use, I have used it almost every day already. This will end up saving us money and keeping our food fresher, longer. Thank you, Food Saver!
