[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We got this kayak to replace a Lifetime Youth Wave Kayak that my 13 year old son is out growing. We have only had sit on top kayaks until this point, so this was a new experience for us. The kayak wasgreat from the start. The only issue was that is had quite a few plastic scrapings that we had to vacuum out of the kayak before we could use it.
It was easy to load especially with 2 people even if they were kids. One person probably could do it, but it would be fairly heavy and awkward, although there is a wheel on the back end which helps with the moving We fit it in our 8 foot bed truck on an angle with a bit still sticking out.
Getting it into the water was easy. Getting into the boat was a little more difficult than a sit on top because the bottom of the boat is more v shaped. Once in, it was very easy to maneuver. Our whole family tried it out and loved it. Our 11 year old twins raced with one in the Tide and one in the Youth kayak. The Tide was definitely faster. All three of the kids were able to use it with no problem. The paddle is functional and comes apart for easy storage.
I had never been in a sit inside kayak and was worried about feeling claustrophobic inside the kayak, but it is roomy and I could stretch my legs out. I also didn't feel squished on the sides. I was also worried about feeling like I would roll, but I felt completely stable even if it did rock more than a sit on top. I thought it also might get really hot and stuffy on the inside, but my legs didn't get hot at all.
One drawback of the side in kayaks are that they don't stack as nicely as sit on top kayaks in storage and in the back of our truck.
This kayak is a wonderful addition to our fleet and will grow with our 13 year old. It will improve his confidence and although him to conquer more than just flat lake water.
