Simply plug it in and it turns on immediately. It does not have an off button, but I think for this purpose, it's okay. There's no smell, and the cartridges are easy to replace when needed. There's replacement cartridges aren't cheap, so that is a factor, but each one should last a while depending on individual households.

We had a fruit fly stick to it in just a few minutes of plugging it in. It came in the box with the trap already in placed. So, all I had to do was pill the tab to expose the sticky part, and plug it in. We live on a farm, so we usually have flies and gnats all spring and summer, so these things are a lifesaver.

The bugs are attracted to it and it's really safe to use and it has a plastic kind of white bright material that blends into your house you don't even know it's there and all the while , it is catching little gnats and the little drain flies or anything else that may enter your house to opening and closing of the doors or come up through your drain very nice to have I enjoy it.
