I used to put the sticky things in my plants but it looks tacky . This attracts the bugs with the UV light and I used this thing for 24 hours and look how many gnats it got !! It continually catches anything 24/7 which I love because that means I won't be smacking flies and what nots with a fly swatter in my kitchen anymore. There is no odor to it and no mess.
