Perfect product
I timed my planting just right and now have a fire pit area that is awesome to look at this fall. I put down Scott's topsoil in July and seeded in mid August. I watered and with the cooler temps had a high yield with the seed. May overseed the yard next year to thicken up my lawn.
This product performs great.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I had a difficult time getting grass to grow in my shaded areas, using many other seed brands, The Scotts Turf Builder grass seed sun & shade mix performed very well. Germinated quickly, filled in fast. Great product.
Grass seed rebuilt a dead lawn
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought a boarded up house that was in foreclosure. I'm not sure how long it had been since the house had occupants. The house was in bad shape and so was the lawn--front and back. After raking and adding some dirt, I seeded heavily with Scott sun and shade grass seed since the property had some trees. Therefore it had sunny and shady areas. Within a few weeks I had thick grass, and no weeds. As I cut the grass, it would grow back thicker and thicker. More cuttings and more water made my lawn the best looking one in the neighborhood. Thanks Scott!!!
Not Much Change
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received four different types of Scotts grass seed as part of their product sampling program. I spread all four seeds in different parts of my yard where I thought they would be most applicable. I followed preparation instructions and watered the seed twice per day for two weeks. I did not see much change with any of the four products.

Saved my lawn
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] A picture says a thousand words my front and backyard went from a muddy mess to having a gorgeous green yard. My neighbors look at my yard and ask what I use and I tell them Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix.
Absolutely waste of money. Followed directions but no resulting growth.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Don't waste your money. Tried 2 bags of this product, followed directions and nothing, absolutely nothing grew. Have used Scotts lawn fertilizer's and other products over the years with excellent result but this one is a loser.
We are sorry that you have experienced problems while using Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix. It is certainly frustrating to go to the work of reseeding an area, only to have the results less than satisfactory. Undoubtedly you will be doing reseeding projects in the future, and we would like to give you a few tips that have been helpful to some of our consumers. Water is an important factor in successful seeding. The newly seeded areas must be kept constantly moist for weeks on end. Allowing the soil to dry out even for an hour during the critical germination phase can result in seedling death. This may require that you give the seeded areas a light watering two to three times a day for the first few weeks. After that, you will still need to keep the seedlings watered on a regular basis. The soil should feel moist like a wrung out sponge. Seeds must come into direct contact with the soil in order to germinate. Our Research Department has told us that if seed is laid on top of old grass, you will have about a 2% germination rate. If you are seeding over an old lawn, we recommend that you rent a slit seeder. If this is not possible, vigorously rake the existing turf, or add a shallow layer of topsoil to the yard prior to seeding. Seed also needs exposure to sunlight. A heavy cover of straw, soil, or other material will cause the seeds to rot, or severely limit germination. Cover seeds with no more than 1/4 of an inch (.63 centimeter) of topsoil or lawn soil. Two "enemies" of newly seeded lawns are herbicides and lawn diseases. While you have very little control over the outbreak of a lawn disease, do make sure that no weed control or weed prevention chemical has been used in the area, as those products will also prevent or inhibit germination. When used on newly germinated lawns, herbicides will kill off the new grass. Finally, temperature plays a critical role in seed germination. Soil temperatures must be at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius) for northern type turf grass seed to germinate (Bluegrass, ryegrass, fescue). Air temperature must typically be between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (15-26 degrees Celsius). Southern seed types (bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, bahiagrass, etc) need soil temperatures of at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius), with air temperatures in the 80's or higher (21 degrees Celsius or above). Seeds will not germinate if the temperatures are cold at night, or are fluctuating from high day temperature to very low night time temperatures. Very hot weather will also inhibit seed germination. completely unsatisfied with scotts product
I purchased a house in northeast ma a year ago that had spotty areas of dead grass. I treated the lawn immediately with scotts grub control and also added lime. Twice a year i add lime no other treatments. Fast forward a year later i wanted to grow grass in the dead areas in my front lawn that has morning sun and afternoon shade. I tried to grow grass in 2 separate areas. The 1st was the 2nd week in may and the 2nd area was the 2nd week in june. 1st area, Raked out the dead grass added some loom and a top layer of scotts turf builder lawn soil then placed the scotts turf builder grass seed sun and shade mix on top. I followed the direction thoroughly. Watered the area as directed. Even checked the soil for moisture each morning 1 inch down to ensure it was receiving enough water. A few blades of grass sporadically grew and about 90% of the treated area had no grass. It is now june 21st so the 1st area is a complete failure. Now during may there was a few nights that got close to the minimum temperature requirement per stated on the bag so i gave scotts the benefit of the doubt. Now to the 2nd area treated. Treated 1st week in june, temperatures are now optimum with the stated requirements. This time i treated half the 2nd area with just plain loom and the other half with loom and the last bag of scotts turf builder lawn soil followed by the seed.i have been watering the seed as required and not one blade of grass has come up. I am going to give it another week. My brother in law seeded his entire back yard with a top competitors brand a few weeks ago and he has full grass coming up. I will be trying the brand he used this fall. I am completely dissapointed with the scotts product. I am out 3 bags of scotts turf builder lawns soil and additional loom i purchased. Scotts has lost a customer here. I didnt keep my receipt so ill be bringing the opened bag of grass seed back to the store and will demand a credit be placed back on my credit card.
We are sorry that you experienced problems while using Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix. We understand the frustration of putting forth the effort to prepare and seed an area and end up disappointed. Grass seeds can often succumb to environmental factors such as disease, insects, or extremes of temperature and moisture. This is not necessarily evidence of inferior grass seed, as even superior grass types are subject to natural stresses. Whatever the reason for this lacking result, we want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. Successful overall but still needs work
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I applied it twice in the fall to some locations and still wasn't happy with the result. I dug up the ground, added nutrients as I did in other locations that grew like crazy, but no success. However, as I said in other locations it was obviously successful. The neighbors even commented that our once weedy yard looks better than their commercially managed yard. I just followed the Scott's processs and was pretty happy with the overall result. I just need to treat some areas in the spring and see if I can even it out.
Love Scott's
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We got the grass seed for our back yard and so far everything is going well. It was easy to put down and when it rained it seeded very well. Love Scott's product and will definitely recommend to everyone
Worked as advertised and had seedlings on 6th day
Met a Scotts rep at local home improvement center. Was planning to get a Rebels strain but he convinced me that Sun and Shade variety would work well in our back yard that gets less sunlight. We brought in topsoil, waited for a cool night to spread seed. We then lightly raked it in and spread seed over that. Watered thoroughly that first night, then followed up several times per day - 4-5. On day five I saw just one seedling. On day six, too many to count. It's been about 8 and we have a see of bright green. Even spread, no weeds, and interestingly, little variation in blade height... all nurtured in same way, I suppose. We lightly spread Scotts Starter fertilizer just this morning so as to have a great affect and not be washed away. Not sure what else we could want. BTW, the blue coating made raking and spread management much easier because seeds were easy to spot.
