Customer reviews for Garmin Index™ S2 Smart Scale, Black forThe Index S2 Smart Scale - A Love and Hate
This is my second scale from Garmin and I do love this new scale over the old one. The metrics are easier to read and faster. I do have to admit I have a love/hate relationship with this scale. I love it when I am focused on my diet and workouts and see the pounds and BMI dropping! I hate this scale when it points out to me that I cheated on my diet and was lazy on some workouts! This scale is very accurate and will keep you in check. I like it because it will be honest with me and let me know I need to pick it up and stop eating bad!
Pain to connect
Overall I like the scale. Setup was a pain, though. I have a decent wi-fi signal in my bathroom, but the scale couldn't pick it up. I moved the scale closer to the router (another room), and things went well. That is, until I moved the scale back into the bathroom. No signal. So...ended up moving my wifi extender closer to the bathroom. I got a signal, but had to factory reset the scale. Finally, it's up and running. After all that, the scale is pretty cool. It knows who is stepping on, based on weight. Could be an issue if 2 people weigh the same? Lots of data that integrates with the Garmin Connect app. I find it works best to weigh in at the same time each day for consistent data.
Works Wonderfully (Except When It Doesn't)
Update: I still love this scale, but it has its quirks. It sometimes will register an absolutely wrong weight (meaning, step on the scale and get a wrong weight, step on it again and you get the correct weight. It has happened several times where the first weight will be 6-10 lbs above normal and the next measurement (immediately thereafter) is in the correct range). Additionally, there appears to be no way (other than resetting the device; what a pain) to purge the scale of these aberrant readings (though you can delete them on your Garmin Connect account). Finally, the scale has the bad habit of phoning home at the most inconvenient times. I step on the scale to wake it up and then - boom! - it connects to Garmin to check for updates (etc.). SO I have to wait sometimes up to 15 minutes before the scale is again usable. Really annoying. Based on these "issues" I'm downgrading my rating from "5 stars" to "4 stars." 4 stars. Original Review: Absolutely no issues setting up this Garmin Index S2 scale. I had it up and running (well, weighing) within 5 minutes. And it works flawlessly. I like the provided metrics; results are in line with other scales I used to check. The next step is to invite a second user. We'll see how that goes. But so far, fantastic. If you're familiar with the Garmin Connect environment you'll have no issues. 5 stars.
Functionally superior device
This scale is highly accurate and seamlessly shares in-depth physiological data with the Garmin Connect App which in turn gathers data from my Garmin D2 Mach I Aviator watch. Put it all together and you get a comprehensive snapshot in time of your overall health.
Seamlessly integrates with the Garmin Connect site
This scale connects via WiFi to the Garmin ecosystem as advertised. It makes tracking weight and its estimate of body fat painless. It does provide other estimates about the distribution of your weight: fat, muscle, bone and water and provides body fat % and BMI. I find the weight and % fat to be the most pertinent info for me. The rest doesn't change much. Interestingly, my dry bones (water content is part of the body water weight estimate) comprise only ~4% of my body weight. Other scales provide the essential information at a lower price point, but the seamless integration with my Garmin makes this worth the extra cost for me.
Faulty out of the box
After receiving the scale I followed the instruction for the battery installation and setup. The scale display just started flashing on and off. I removed the batteries and reinstalled them without any luck. I even bought a new set of batteries and it did not solve my problem. The Garmin website had no solution for the problem. I even tried to find solutions in numerous online forums. It seems this is a common problem with this item. I can’t believe Garmin would put their name on a substandard item like this.

Like the data, very buggy to set up initially
Bought a while back and does well except when the batteries die. After new batteries are installed, you have to re-setup all the people using it again, but the connection and setup take multiple tries before it will finally connect. Once connected, it is good for another 9-12 months.
Good Features/ very unique wake process
I like the scale and how it integrates with Garmin Connect. The wake up process is unnecessarily difficult and counter intuitive. Considered returning the scale for this reason. I find it odd that I have to knock on the scale with my knuckles to activate it. If you can get over this odd design characteristic, as I have, it is a great scale.
It wasn't what I expected from Garmin
I have had many Garmin gadgets, including GPSes, smart watches, etc., over the years. I have always been very pleased with the Garmin products I have purchased. This scale seemed like a good quality scale, with lots of nice features. And I liked that it would automatically transmit data to the Garmin Connect app. However, I had too many problems with it. The first time I tried to set it up, I followed the instructions and went through all the steps. However, it just wouldn't work. I finally got frustrated with it and gave up for the night. The next morning, I went back to play with it some more, and found that it was now working. Apparently, it needed to be connected to the Internet for some time before it would start working. Maybe it had to do some software update or something? Unfortunately, there was no indication of why it took so long to finally start working. After that, it worked great for a few days. Then it got stuck in a state where, when I stood on the scale, the weight reading just kept moving up and down, as if I was not standing still. At first, I thought it was me being a little wobbly first thing in the morning. But, no matter how still I stood, the weight kept going up and down and would never stabilize. And it was like 20 or 30 lbs. up and down, not just a little unstable. I finally decided to reset the scale, set it up all over again, etc. Then it started working again for a day or two. Then, one morning, I tried to weigh myself, but all it would do is show an hourglass icon. I waited a few minutes for the hourglass to go away, but it didn't. At this point, I was so frustrated with the problems that I decided to return the scale. There was nothing wrong with my old scale. And it was a lot easier to just weight myself and then enter the information manually in the Connect app.
Easy weight tracking
I really only wanted this scale for 1 reason, to easily track my weight from day to day. It does a great job of doing that so long as you like using the Garmin Connect app. Setup - Setup was fairly smooth though I got stuck on one screen for a bit, eventually I was able to connect the scale to my Garmin Connect app. Daily Use - This does a great job uploading my weight to the connect app. - I enjoy that it accounts for multiple users and automatically identifies who is on the scale. I'm not sure how it does this, but it chooses between me and my son correctly every time. - Measurements of weight are fairly quick, it typically takes about 3 seconds before it locks in the weight and shows who it thinks is on the scale. - You have to tap the scale quickly and firmly to wake it up which took a bit to get used to but now it works easy time. Accuracy - Honestly, I have no clue how accurate any of the measurements beyond the weight are. I do trust the weight measurement, but the rest of the data I mostly ignore because it's not of interest to me. Looks - This is a really good looking scale and I like the look and quality feel of it.
