It's terrible to get the gas out of the thing. Squeeze it like crazy and it only comes out in a trickle.
Hello Bob – We are sorry to hear you have had difficulty using your fuel can. After VENTING the fuel can, there are two steps to using this spout. Step 1. UNLOCK: Using your palm, press the small dark green lock tab up to unlock. Step 2: POUR: Place your fingers over the black grip and keeping the lock tab depressed and using your palm, squeeze to slide the large green pad forward to release the fuel. This video may also help: https://www.scepter.com/safety/instructional-videos/ . There is some stiffness expected when sliding the large green pad forward as that is part of the child resistant feature, however it should not require excessive force. You may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. If you are still having difficulty, please reach out to our Customer Care Team at 1.800.387.6018 so we can help get this resolved for you. Thank you

Cans nice, spouts AWFUL
I needed some new gas cans, unfortunately, and went with these as the price was good. These "child proof" spouts are the worst! How many years did children know NOT to play with gas cans and now we need special spouts because parents dont do their job...*sigh* I am going to look for non child proof spouts as we have no children living at home and we taught them not to play with certain things. Cans seem nice but these spouts just don't work right. Be careful when taking to the gas station to fill as you cant put the pump on full or the gas squirts back in your face due to the white filter on the inside (which will soon mysteriously disappear I think). Yea, always fun having gas in your face and having to drive home with that smell in the car the whole way.
Hi Michael - We apologize for your experience. Customer satisfaction is very important to Scepter. Please contact our Customer Service team at 1-800-387-6018 or email customerservice@scepter.com so that we can resolve this for you. Similar to medication packaging, gas/diesel cans must also adhere to strict child resistance packaging laws. All fuel containers sold in the United States must come equipped with a child-safety lock and adhere to environmental regulations (EPA). Unfortunately, the dark green tab is part of the child safety lock mechanism and cannot be fixed to remain open. This product should only be used with the spout it came with at the time of purchase. Every automobile/equipment is different, so it is not a one size fits all situation. The SMARTCONTROL gas can, is designed to be used with your palm. Step 1: Vent the fuel can by slowly unscrewing the cap, allow all the pressure to escape. Once vented re-tighten cap. You may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 2: Flip up dark lever on back of spout with your palm. Step 3: With the dark green lever still flipped up, push the entire light green pad forward. It will be stiff as that is part of the child resistant feature. Again, you may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 4: Tilt can and pour. This can has a flow rate of 3+ gallons per minute when actuated fully. The “screen” you see in the neck of the fuel can is actually a safety device called a flame mitigation device (FMD). Its inclusion in fuel containers is part of a 2020 U.S. law to improve overall safety. It does not make it safe to mix Gas and Fire, which remains extremely dangerous, but helps to protect the consumer against situations of potential misuse. Do not ever remove or modify the FMD. We understand that filling the containers now requires the user to learn to rest the pump in the center of the FMD, on the steps, to fill at full speed. The spout has a channel for venting when pouring. You can also choose simply to take your time filling the container. We have posted both fill and pour instructions online at https://www.scepter.com/safety/instructional-videos/ which should help. We are here to help!

Scepter gas can
Smart design, what a laugh … needs to be reengineered. Horrible design on the spout gas pours out everywhere once you figure out how to hold it and get it going , would be nice if companies would give you the option to buy the non updated version of items because this is junk

leaky, hard to use
this is the worst gas can i have ever bought. First, you have to push the heel of your hand hard on the bottom part of the release, while pulling on a lever, while holding up the gas can with one arm, and a five gallon gas can is pretty heavy, then it leaks gas down your arm and into your shoe. i am in good shape and can curl over 100 pounds and this was still difficult. the leaking would not stop and i tightened it all the way, no more movement whatsoever. Do not buy unless it is for someone that you do not like.

Poorly engineered
I’ve experienced some poorly functioning products in my life and this thing is at top of that terrible list. Functionality is just awful. On top of that it leaks gas everywhere. I’m not sure how this thing passed any type of inspection to be released to production. If I hadn’t filled it with gas and didn’t want to deal with the smell I would return it.

Dangerous
The gas can was very difficult to fill with gas at the pumps. Actually, it was dangerous! As the design of the gas can cannot handle the pressure of the flow of gas and sprays it back at you, soaking you with the flammable liquid! I definitely would not recommend.
