The few times that I had a brief surge, the pad protected me - except for once. That one time I had the pad too high in my underwear and the side wasn't as protected as it needed to be. Fortunately there weren't any people around. The diagram shows the pad a couple of inches down from the waistband, and that's where it needs to be. NOT AT the waistband as I did that one time. They always go with me whenever I'm not sure of a readily available bathroom.
