Can I choose the frequencies?

Hi, I have two Midland Two Way Radio (GXT-800) and use them. They are perfect. Thank you so much for the products you made. Now, I want to buy two more (probably GXT-1000) and two pairs again. My questions are: 1-) Can I use them together, I mean at same time (old models and new models)? 2-) I will buy two radio from your store (GXT-1000). Can I choose them as FRS or GMRS before send me? Can you setup them for me as GMRS? Thank you so much. Ilker

F.C.C. license required & Weak

The normal consumer can only use 28 of the 50 channels the first 22 channels you must obtain a FCC license in order to talk on these channels , with that being said the range was week over a just a few miles with line of sight and no obstructions to hinder transmission. I found these radios were not much better than low end walkie talkies. The price point you pay is for all the options of bells and whistle not actual distance of radio contact. I would like to see if some one could test these over a flat area such as water for the advertised 36 miles range.

Good Distance

Used these on a motorcycle trip and they had good reception over a long distance straight line. That shrank to about a mile in the mountains around curves but in towns you could get a few miles apart before the reception started dropping off. The headsets were a different story and I will review them under the headset review.

GXT1000VP4 Seems Like a Good Set of Radios

I just got the radios today. Setup was straight forward and the instructions were easy to follow. So far, the only real use has been a test call between the two radios, but sound quality is good. and they seem to be solidly built for the price. My only con is the headsets--they don't stay on my ear.

Useless beyond 1 mile range

Don't be fooled by the "36 Mile" range claim. The package gives varying ranges depending upon terrain but all promise more than the less than 1 mile range actually available. Static and other users on a channel may be from further than the 1 mile distance of the second radio but there is no reception beyond that for the partner radio, even in fairly open valleys. Construction seems solid but the PTT button is soft and difficult to actuate, requiring a single finger at a 90 degree angle, much harder to use than standard hinged PTT's, especially with gloves.

How do you know when batteries are fully charged?

These have been working awesome so far. Thanks. I just wanted to check how do ACTUALLY know when the batteires are fully charged? My charger just stays red the entire time and never turns off. I don't want to over charge them. I keep reading that 10 to 12 hours to fully charge them but is there an auto shut off on the charger that i'm not seeing? how are you guys checking? THANKS! So far its a great product. just this issue i'm trying to figure out.

Impressive range for such a small radio.

I'm no radio expert but these fit my need perfectly. My son and I ride touring motorcycles and were looking for good communications that were practical. The expensive bluetooth units can be buggy and not always pair with other riders. These won't pair with them either but if everyone used a GMRS radio then motorcycle coms would be much easier. Initial test range was 2.8 miles on high setting before it got too hard to understand. We don't plan to ever be that far apart while riding. They were paired with the AVPH2 helmet headsets, bought separately. We have full face helmets. I only wish they were rechargeable with a usb port. Space is limited on motorcycles. We can also use these radios for coms on family caravans.

limited range

These radios work as long as you do not beleive the advertised range. No radios in this classification will have the advertised range. These are comparable or maybe a little better than some. Most times and under most conditions you will not get more than a mile at best. If you understand this going in you will be satisfied. Has some good features such as whisper mode and the ability to recharge at home or in car.

Batteries Subpar, Range Poor

The reason you get radios is to communicate. The range is poor on these units which is a shame and the batteries didn't seem to last need to switch to AAs. Below are the tests that I had Test 1: Charity event run in a parking lot. Batteries didn't seem to last and switched to AAs Test 2: The range in a strip mall in snowy conditions, ~300 ft. Channel Used: 2 Test 3: Range 1.5 miles from site. Just get static no clear audio. Channel Used 28 Used High Power for Range

Found A Coronavirus Use For Our 2 GXT1000 Units!

Had bought them mainly for our Florida hurricanes, when all telephone service can go out (and has here). Now we've found a new use for our 2 GXT1000 units. We’re using them as mobile in-house and on-the-property intercoms. More instantly responsive than cell phones, just a press on the button and talk. Because only one of us is going out into the community for essentials in hard-hit South Florida, to grocery stores & pharmacies. And that person who goes out is self-isolating within our home, no physical contact with the other. A bit OCD? Perhaps. But we’re aged 86 & 71, with a laundry list of medical issues. Can’t take any chances, yet we need to get our meds, some are only monthly. We also use Apple’s FaceTime on our desktop computers, iPads & iPhones. So we can see each other as we speak, when we’re near those devices. Yeah, old people can handle modern tech, too. But the Midland GXT units, that we can carry around with us for instant talking, are just great. Voice clarity wonderful. We never envisioned we’d be using them in a situation like this, Thanks, Midland!
