As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get to test products from time to time and for this trip I was given the opportunity to test the [Midland](https://midlandusa.com/product/gxt1030vp4-two-way-gmrs-radio/) Two-Way GMRS Radio in the GXT1030VP4 Series. **Pros:** * Easy to charge wherever you might be with both AC and DC chargers. * SOS & NOAA Weather features * Battery comes fully charged straight out of the box. * Lengthy battery life **Cons:** * Signal can be a bit hindered by terrain and you lose some of the 30 miles you are told you have for communication. I will say that before I hit the road I did a few tests on the equipment to make sure I fully understood the features. The communication from radio to radio was crisp in my tests up to 10 miles. Although I will say that after that distance I did have a little struggle. I feel like after reading the materials that it had a lot to do with the tree coverage in our area and my lack of previous experience in use to troubleshoot. With this particular trip I took both radios with me because I would be later meeting a friend along the way, but for this campsite I was most interested in using the radio for its NOAA weather alert feature. Recently, in Arkansas there have been a lot of flash floods in remote areas such as the one in which I was staying. These particular Midland Radios are ideal for allowing you to know when one of these is coming your way so you can seek shelter immediately. I scanned several times through the 10 NOAA stations and it did in fact pay off just before bedtime when I was warned of a severe storm which would be passing through. Had it not been for this I would have more than likely taken my rain fly off my tent for improved circulation since it was so hot and humid. In addition, I always make sure to keep something in my tent and on my day pack for emergencies and safety. I usually have a tool or some kind or a knife, but adding the Midland Radio to that for its SOS Alert was a perfect way to make me feel a bit more secure in my travel. The alert is a loud substation noise which can be heard for quite a distance when you simply press and hold down the SOS button located on the front face plate of the radio. I was a little worried about the battery life of the radio and leaving it on for the duration of an evening to feel secure. I fully tested the battery life when camping at Lenox Marcus, turning the radio on steady at approximately 8 p.m. and not off until 6 a.m. The charge not only held but was still full when I returned it to its carrying space in my front cup holder of my car. This was in addition to being turned off and on throughout the day when I would exit my car to explore sites. All in all, the Midland Two-Way GMRS Radio has made its way into my travel pack for more adventures. The features go on and on as to how it can benefit my hikes with friends, improve my overall awareness, bring efficiency to charging through both AC and DC connections and of course provide that SOS Safety net. I would give the Midland Two-Way GMRS Radio 5 stars!

These have been working awesome so far. Thanks. I just wanted to check how do ACTUALLY know when the batteires are fully charged? My charger just stays red the entire time and never turns off. I don't want to over charge them. I keep reading that 10 to 12 hours to fully charge them but is there an auto shut off on the charger that i'm not seeing? how are you guys checking? THANKS! So far its a great product. just this issue i'm trying to figure out.

These are very nice high quality Walkie Talkies, for the price I got what I payed for. They work great at my house and all around my 50 acres we can get great coverage. I have yet to try out the new Micro Mobile base station, sounds like a great purchase. The headsets are wonderful I love the way they fit and look on my head, the covert acoustic headset that is. I get great over 8 hour charge on a full charge, they charge fast on the desk charger. Overall great product! Good Job Midland! I will only buy Midland now!

NOT WORTH IT, Buy Motorolla brand not midland. one of the rechargeable batteries was dead out of the box and unable to be charged or used. We used double a batteries instead and are used for these is between two vehicles which are usually Within two or three hundred yards at most. after two vehicles get in between the radios do not work. they say up to 36 miles in ideal conditions... yet again they didn't even work 100 or 200 yd.

Bought these radios as compliments to a set of Midlands I already own. Good radios. I would have rated 5 star except their very difficult to pair. And when I grouped them they won't communicate to my older Midland set. Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong, but I've read the instruction a couple of times and also Googled my problem. However that said, these radios are great value, work well and will do 90% of what I want them for. The grouping will just have to wait until I can afford to replace the older ones.

GMRS radios require a FCC license. Information was on bottom of the box in fine print. I overlooked that because no one puts important information like that on the bottom of the box. I emailed Midland about the information on their box. As for the radios, I was in my car 5 to 7 miles away talking to someone in a house that has a metal roof. It may have gone farther had we both been out in the open on flat ground. Voice was clear and sounded good. We were on a GRMS channel on high power. Good range for a hand held radio but I dont think it will get the 36 miles as stated on the box.

The reason you get radios is to communicate. The range is poor on these units which is a shame and the batteries didn't seem to last need to switch to AAs. Below are the tests that I had Test 1: Charity event run in a parking lot. Batteries didn't seem to last and switched to AAs Test 2: The range in a strip mall in snowy conditions, ~300 ft. Channel Used: 2 Test 3: Range 1.5 miles from site. Just get static no clear audio. Channel Used 28 Used High Power for Range

I almost didn't buy this product after seeing the negative reviews but I am glad I ignored them. I purchased them to help in traffic control during an event which was held on an 80 acre wooded area. The terrain was dense woods and rolling terrain with a few obstructions. This radio performed flawlessly and covered the entire area with ease. The transmissions were clear and strong and it worked with other volunteers radios of different brands. I didn’t have time to charge the included rechargeable battery packs as those take 24 hours to charge initially. I used 4 AA batteries. Used the units for 6 hours continuously and the battery level showed a full three bars at the end, so no issues with battery life. Performed as advertised. Very happy with the purchase.

Hi, I have two Midland Two Way Radio (GXT-800) and use them. They are perfect. Thank you so much for the products you made. Now, I want to buy two more (probably GXT-1000) and two pairs again. My questions are: 1-) Can I use them together, I mean at same time (old models and new models)? 2-) I will buy two radio from your store (GXT-1000). Can I choose them as FRS or GMRS before send me? My son and I have been using these for about a month now and they are great radios. In our area we are able to communicate clearly in about a 3 mile radius due to the number of trees. They will be perfect for keeping in touch when we are hunting since cell service is limited where we hunt. The features on the radios are easy to use and they seem to be pretty durable. The one thing I wish these radios had are lithium ion batteries. I just purchased an MXT275 to mount in my truck and I'm looking forward to using it.
