Nice little kit, love the weather alert channel. The ear pieces work but are painful to wear.
Bought this for use on motorcycles. Earpiece/Mike was too loose for inside the helmet wear without support. I was able to install the earpiece/mike in my 3/4 face helmet by sliding the mike behind the cheek cushion and the earpiece fit in the gap for my ear, so no problem. Also managed to soft wire the earpiece/mike to the cheek straps of a shorty helmet. Vox is not really an option with the wind noise, but PTT works. With road and M/C noise I needed to keep the volume up so I could hear the other person. The only thing that I have not been able to solve yet is finding the PTT button easily while riding. Its a little small may need to order a larger one. Overall a good experience.
Good for hiking
I occasionally get the chance to review gear for The Dyrt as one of their Rangers. I purchased these walkie talkies for a trip to Utah, where would be doing lots of hiking, climbing and canyoneering. Some pros about the duel pack are: 1.) Battery life- we charged these up on their charging station at home before we left on our trip and they lasted the entire 10 day trip on regular use. 2.) Intuitive usuage – We didn’t need to score through the manual to figure out how to use the walkie talkies. Everything made sense and was user friendly. 3.) EXTREMELY Clear Communication - no static or clarity issues However, the clip on the radios was not up to par (it fell right off my backpack strap), and there were zero loops or holes on the device for us to sling or carabiner them to ourselves. This meant that while climbing, if dropped, they would be toast. We ended up "locking" them to us via rubber bands. This is a great product for casual hiking, but it might not be ideal for more extreme situations where it has the potential to fall off/get lost or damaged (rafting, climbing, skiing). We will most likely just try to keep them in a pack, rather than on our body in those cases.
Excellent Radio
Used these in the Book Cliff backcountry in Utah on a packing trip 30 miles from any roads. I was very surprised at the reception and clarity. I was a couple miles away from others around ridges and rocks and trees yet still had clear communication. It wasn't until I was probably 3 miles away and separated by a few ridges that reception began to get "static." One excellent feature that the other high end midland radios don't have is the ability to charge with a USB and battery pack. Plugged them in each night and charged quickly with a portable battery pack. My other T299 and T295 radios that are marketed as "Outfitter" radios stay home because you can only charge them with an AC adapter - the cigarette lighter adapter won't work because they are not compatible with a 12v system. The one thing Midland can do better is to make a waterproof version because we were in snow for 3 days straight. Just had to be careful to keep out of the moisture which is inconvenient when you're doing a lot of communication.
Great value!
As a Ranger for The Dyrt, occasionally I get to test products. I tested the Midland Radios X-Talker Extreme Dual Pack T77VP5 while camping and hiking through Anthony Lakes. Being in a vast wooded area, I was thrilled to have radios that worked well and could be easily charged with a USB cord and a power block. Lightweight and easy to attach to a backpack or belt. Pros: - Good value (price for product); two radios, soft-shell carrying case, earpieces, charging station, USB car charger, USB wall plug-in charger, rapid rechargeable batteries, 36-channels. - Range of up to 38 miles! - Sounds great and keeps a charge. Cons: - The charging station is a light plastic and doesn’t feel as durable as thicker plastic. Overall, I give the Midland Radio X-Talker Extreme Dual Pack T77VP5 five stars. It delivers exactly what it says it does. It’s a great value and a product worth having to keep you in communication with others during your outdoor adventures!
Won’t leave home without them!!
The x talker radios have become nearly as important to my hiking gear list as my boots. I will not hike without these. The security of being able to stay in constant contact with the rest of the party is priceless. Incredible range and the battery’s last all day even with an abundance of radio chatter throughout the day!
Good radios!
As a Dyrt Ranger I sometimes get products to evaluate. This trip I tested out the Midland X-Talker two way radio - T77VP5. The kit we used came bundled into a zippered case that is perfect for keeping everything organized. We charged it up before our trip and even tried it out in a school building. We read reviews that said it might not work well in buildings and thought we should see. I gave them to two high schoolers and asked them to run throughout the place testing them as they went. They came back happy and excited and wanted to keep using them. The real test came out in the woods. The belt clip snaps on easily and this stayed connected to my pack strap for our entire hike. The X-Talker fits nicely in the hand and the buttons are perfectly placed. Another feature I wanted to try was the weather radio. It scans channels automatically to find a weather channel in range. You just need to listen to the report as it cycles through the days. We had some rain and storms moving in so this proved useful in helping us sneak out of camp really early to avoid the downpour that was looming. The Midland X-Talker T77VP5 radios worked wonderfully and will certainly see more use on future adventures.
Worthy Contender
As a Review Ranger for theDyrt. Midland provided this product for review. Having spent my career dependent on “hand transmitters,” I know, firsthand, of their benefits and importance...I have also learned of their strengths and shortcomings. I am also realistic in my expectations when it comes to the differences between recreational and professional grade “hand transmitters” (HT’s). First and foremost, do your homework when considering portable radios. Don’t expect a recreational radio to perform like a professional radio, especially professional one that operates with repeaters...or you will be sorely disappointed and wrongly blame the product. I have lost reception with teammates when using professional HT’s separated by multiple floors in concrete structures. Personally...I believe the Midland X-Talker Extreme T77VP5 has a solid place in the outdoor, backpacking, camping world. I can name 25 campground and Wilderness areas in West Virginia alone where cell service is non-existent...yet you can still communicate with this Midland radio (within certain distances). Communication is life...and a huge part of survivability. It certain career fields, you do not proceed with a mission without comms. I was able to communicate effectively at varying distances with the Midland X-Talker Extreme. The myriad of channels assists in finding one where you aren’t “stepping” on someone else’s communication, and you can enjoy a somewhat ‘private’ conversation. These channels are not encrypted, so transmissions can be heard by others that have the same channel availability. However, if you have several Midland radios on the same channel, you do have the option of privacy codes to limit listeners within that select group. We also tried my own version of ‘line of sight,’ on a long, curved stretch of Gulf beach. These were my results: • .5 mile excellent reception • 1 mile excellent reception • 2 mile was unreliable...hit and miss Scientific results? Nope! Only what I experienced. Humidity, impending storms, pressure, and sea state may have caused ducting affecting range. Negative results? Nope! You learn to work within the parameters dealt. The Midland X-Talker Extreme T77VZP5 is still an effective, feature-rich hand transmitter set! Trying to keep tabs on the kids while camping, give them a radio, operational instructions and clip it to their belt or pack. Kids love electronic gadgets, so it’s likely they’ll quickly be instructing you of its many features and usefulness. Peace of mind and quick communication...just a button push away. I would wholeheartedly recommend this product!
Reliable and farm proof
We use these radio on a day to day basis in the fall around the grain setup. Safety and communication is key and the midland walkie talkies are perfect for around the grain setup. They are super durable as well. I have dropped them off a 40 foot bin before onto concrete and they still work great!
