THIS REVIEW IS FOR PICKY EATERS. I'm 39yo and if you can't guess by the title, extremely picky.
THESE ARE INFINITELY BETTER THAN ANY OTHER BAKED BEANS I'VE EVER HAD: store-bought (canned and fresh prepared) and possibly homemade, too.
PROS
- They have an amazing depth of flavor that keeps my tastebuds dancing and from getting bored (unlike canned)
- I've seen many reviews complain they're too sweet. Um...I EARNED my diabetes. In other words, for me the high sweetness level helps make them so delicious. 1/4 cup (half serving) has the perfect number of carbs for a snack as a diabetic. Not gonna say this is the right or wrong way to eat them, but just pointing out that there's always the option to treat it like any other high sugar or high carb food - consume in moderation - if you want or need to watch carbs. SO my point here is more sugar = a pro, not a con, for me
- I saw many reviews state there isn't enough brisket. Now, I've only had about one serving so far, but in that space I came across several sizable chunks of brisket. Possible con on that, at least for me: I had never had brisket before, although had gathered that it's supposed to be melt in your mouth delicious or something. Personally, the texture really bothered me and I think I'll pick it all out moving forward. Mail it all to the reviewers who want more?
POSSIBLE CONS
- Maybe smokiness. One of my flavor sensitivities that is not 100% absolute is smokiness (so I strongly dislike it overall and in most dishes, but in certain dishes when it's not overpowering and is combined with the right flavors, I can at least tolerate it, although still not really enjoy that aspect). So for example, I absolutely cannot do char on any foods, nor many smoky barbecue sauces, but recently I have found one or two smoky BBQ flavors that I actually don't mind.
POINT BEING: the first bite, or maybe two, of these beans, had a smokiness that jumped out at me and made my tastebuds go "uh oh". But because of my recent bbq experiences and the overall deliciousness of the rest of the flavors in the beans, I kept going, and the smokiness quickly faded and kind of blended into the other flavors to make a more general pleasant experience. For comparison, foods and flavors that I can't tolerate at all (of which there are many dozens) NEVER fade in and mix in like that, and I automatically know that if they're an ingredient in a dish, I will not be able to tolerate the dish at all. Not a single taste.
- Spiciness/heat level - NOTE THAT UNLESS YOU'RE VERY VERY VERY SENSITIVE TO HEAT, THESE BEANS WILL *NOT* SEEM SPICY TO YOU. I happen to be one of those people, and most of the time I detected only the tiniest, slightest hint of heat...like I'm pretty sure this is the first time in my life I've detected a level of heat so low that I was simultaneously able to notice it, while it actually didn't bother me. However, toward the end of the bowl it DID start to hurt a little. So you know.
I do hope this helps 💜
