The UV and blue light does its thing. Attracting bugs, and the curved shield hides all the gross stuff so I don't have to look at it. I plugged it in my kitchen near where I usually see fruit flies and within a day or two I noted way less buzzing around. The refill is easy to pop out too with that little tap.
