Don't buy if you're going to wire it in

Don't buy this if you have cold winters and want to use it as a wired model - get the 2nd gen wired model instead. I bought it before the 2nd gen wired model came out, and I wish I hadn't. I live in Vermont, and the battery will not charge below 32F, even if the doorbell is hard-wired in to keep it charged 24/7. Reddit is full of people from other northern states and Canada with the same complaint. Google advertises this as being able to work wired OR on battery, but if the battery is too cold to charge or the battery drops below 20% or so, it will stop responding to motion/faces/packages/cars/animals, etc. and all you can do is bring it inside to charge to get that functionality back. Even above freezing, wiring this device in only kept the battery around 30% or so. If most functionality stops around 20%, why keep it that low? Wiring this in is a a useless "option" with way too many drawbacks. I couldn't be happier with the device's operation when powered properly, it just doesn't work as a wired doorbell in northern latitudes. I used it in a Homekit setup with the Starling hub, and it functions well. I'm also very happy with my 2nd gen wired model so far.

reply from Nest Support

Hi there Peter, thanks for sharing your insights with us on Nest Doorbell (Battery). Although we are glad that you're happy with your Nest Doorbell (Battery) operation, we're sorry to hear that the limitation with the operating temperature range didn't meet your expectations. During winter, the battery life of Nest Doorbell (Battery) may have less than half the life that it has at temperatures close to -4°F (-20°C). A typical battery life of Nest Doorbell (Battery) will last about 2.5 months (about 13 - 16 recorded events per day), and this will get shorter depending on factors including activity, temperature, and selected camera settings. However, we'll certainly take the information that you provided us into consideration and see how we can further improve the features for our Google Nest cameras and doorbells. Alternatively, if you still have some questions or support needs with your Google Nest devices, we'd be happy to address them and help you out. Please feel free to reach out to our support team using this link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Love Google products.

The quality is good. The picture is very good. The only thing is the battery doesn't seem to last long. If u can wire it in that's the way to go. It can send notifications to the tv. Works on your google nest. You also get notifications on your phone if u have google home app.

Doorbell Cam

Easy to set up. Unit can be easily stolen unless a tamper proof mounting device is used.

Hey there, Grod. We’re sorry your experience with the Nest Doorbell (battery) hasn’t been the best. Battery life will depend on multiple factors, including activity, temperature, and camera settings. Here’s a few setting changes to help conserve battery life: 1. Change the video quality: Adjust the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use.2. Turn off seen events: If you turned motion events on in your camera or doorbell's settings, you can turn them off to conserve battery.3. Use Activity Zones: You can also create custom Activity Zones to further reduce the amount of activity your camera detects.4. Shorten the maximum event length: Making the event length shorter will reduce battery usage. Here’s an article with additional tips: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/10901611?If you any additional support, don’t hesitate to reach out to us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp?
