I’m not seeing the issue here…

This is your basic chili recipe. I mean, for the price who can complain really. It’s an excellent deal and way to feed a crowd without a lot of hassle and costing an arm and leg. Everyone’s taste buds are different so you might have to add ingredients to get it to your liking. Even if you have to tweak it, it’s still cheaper than making it from Scratch. This was served over hot dogs and I received no complaints. Unlike other brands, Stagg does not cheat you on beef. The first thing I noticed was how much was in each can, impressive! Also, it freezes beautifully, so don’t throw out the extras. I highly recommend this product. And will purchase again. Helpful tip: cook this low and slow, or it will burn to the bottom of your pan and ruin the taste. Slow cooker on low stirring occasionally is probably the best way to prepare. Take advantage of this great deal, I’m glad I did.

Perfect for Nachos

I love this chili for frito pies and chili cheese nachos it's the PERFECT consistency, the flavor is rich and not watered down and the carne in the chili is also not scarce. I always recommend it to all family and friends for their parties.

best for chili dogs!

We buy this each week for chili dogs and nachos. It sells well and we've had lots of compliments on it's taste, but I'll be looking for it in a smaller can next time. We waste too much of it each week.

How to make it great

This can be a wonderful, inexpensive chili feast. Add rotel tomatoes, green chilies, canned kidney beans, seasoning salt, garlic powder and onion powder = home run. But, as a stand alone canned product, not the best and has a crazy amount of saturated fat.

Meh

It is a little too thick for chili texture. I can’t locate the one with beans any more so I have to add beans and try to thin out chili. It’s kind of average or less on the canned chili scale. I’m not sure that I’ll continue purchasing it…though I’ve bought it over the years with beans and meat.

Surprisingly disappointing

I've been tasting all the canned chilis that Sam's carries. I rank them as follows, best to worst: Wolf, Chef Mate, Hormel and Stagg. The last two are tied for last, the first two just taste better. I base this on flavor only. Each have their strong suit. Some are meatier than others, but for overall flavor, it's Wolf. Wolf has the least amount of meat chunks, but a really delicious base chili flavor. Concerning Stagg and what it has going for it, it is one of the few "no bean" chilis that's all beef, no pork. Several other brands use beef and pork, which isn't a dealbreaker to me, but some people want all beef. Stagg also has the highest fat content, making it the most caloric. That said, the problem I have isn't the calories or the amount of beef, it's the flavor. This is not a good tasting chili to me. It has a bitterness that I don't think should be there. The amount of chili pepper is OK, it's mild which is fine (you can always spice it up), and it's meaty enough, but the flavor is disappointing. I had to add some diced tomatoes just to try to make the gravy more palatable. I honestly expected Stagg to be the best. Unfortunately, I won't be buying this again.

Inedible. Went to the garbage...

It was inedible even with some doctoring. It says no beans but it had a lot of soy beans in it. The "meat" was mushy so probably contained a lot of ground bone. I wasn't expecting great chili but I thought it would at least be edible. I used some of this brand years ago but it was different then. This isn't even good as something to sit on the shelf for emergencies. One would do better to get some cans of freeze dried beef and tomato powder if one wanted survival supplies. I feel really sorry for anyone on charity that is given that to eat.

Almost as good as liquid drano

I've eaten other Stagg brand chili (small cans) and it is great, this, this is overpriced "austex" chili (at best). My brother pointed out that the burnt chili you get at Sonic (when they scrape the bottom of the cooker) taste better than this, and I can't disagree with him. There is not enough bad things I can say about this, I would be hard pressed to choose between liquid drano and this junk if you had a gun pointed at my puppy.

nasty & greasy

I Bought 2 cans for a school Christmas Party. We had nachos, hot dogs, etc. I found chili to be very greasy. I skimmed off almost an inch of nasty red grease from the top of the crockpot. Taste was not great and smelled bad as it was heating. The students kept asking what that horrible smell was. I threw away at least 2/3s of it. Kids wouldn't eat it. I'll stick to wolf brand from now on or just make it homemade. Disappointing!!!
