I have 2 small children and a long haired dog, so we are vacuuming our home almost every day. We have an even mix of flooring in my home, and I've been used to transitioning between my upright vacuum and a stick vacuum depending on what floor I'm cleaning at the time. The Surface sense allows me to clean all of my floors with just one vacuum. It senses the floor, and transitions easily from bare floor to plush carpet so I can go to different rooms and hallways without switching vacuums. On bare floor, it suctions everything up without just moving dirt and debris around and has been great for removing dog hair from carpet and furniture without getting tangled in the brush roll. This vacuum is easy to empty and lightweight which makes it easy to maneuver and take up and down stairs. Getting dog hair out of our carpeted stairs was once a tedious chore, but the Turbo Eraser attachment has helped me to quickly clean and remove the hair with ease. My favorite feature is the lighted crevice tool that helps me get in between couch cushions, around the edges of furniture and the edge of the carpet by the baseboards. The only thing I would change is on the base of the vacuum. It is wide, but hard to run along edges and baseboards to know that I'm getting all of the hair and dirt along those edges. Overall, this vacuum is great to have to clean up after pets and families and truly know that both carpets and bare floors are clean.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently received the Bissell Surface Sense Upright Vacuum from the Stellar Product Testing Panel to test and review. This vacuum is amazing! I have many things I appreciate about it but my favorite features are how lightweight it is and how easy it is to maneuver around my home. I also love that I can use it on the different flooring surfaces in our home including the carpet in our living room, area rug in our dining area and the linoleum in our kitchen. This vacuum was super easy to set up with clear instructions and helpful step by step videos. As I previously mentioned, I enjoy how lightweight this vacuum is. I also like that I don't need to worry about purchasing replacement bags as it has an attached canister you empty instead. It is much smaller than my older vacuum by another brand and this one has a much stronger suction and gets my floors cleaner as well. Our family has four kids, a long hair Golden Retriever mix dog and a long hair Siamese cat. The awesome tangle-free brush roll had no problems tackling our floors! My first time using it, I couldn't believe how much pet hair and dirt was in the canister when I dumped it. It is very effective at lifting hair, debris and dirt and I'm still impressed with the results each time I use it. It is very convenient that I can move from one room to the next, switching between carpet and linoleum and the vacuum senses surface changes and adjusts accordingly. I have typically had to sweep my kitchen but being able to zip around and vacuum it instead has been wonderful and time saving. It also has LED lights to help as you navigate. I also love the easy to use hose extension for using around my baseboards as well as reaching up high to capture spider webs off the walls and ceilings. Overall, I am very impressed with this Surface Sense Upright Vacuum's suction and its cleaning power. I typically dread vacuuming but now I actually look forward to it!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This vacuum is overall a great choice for housholds with a lot of pet hair, if for nothing else but the fantastic brushroll. Unlike my other vacuums, I never have to cut hair and fur out of this one, which saves me so much time and aggravation! The ability for it to sense the floor type and automatically adjust is pretty cool and seems like it helps the brushroll function well to pick up dust, dirt, and fur. It cleans all of the different surfaces well and it makes quick work of my main floor (including both hardwood floors and rugs). Even the fine bits of dust from our remodeling projects has been picked up no problem! That said, this vacuum is not perfect and will not work be everyone's favorite. The attachments are okay, but since they are only powered by the suction of the vacuum and the performance shows that. The small rotating upholstery tool is a huge disappointment and basically non functional for me as it would get stuck on anything but the most taught of fabrics when stretched. I usually just hoist the whole vacuum up onto the couch now, as it's pretty light anyway. The other issue I ran into is how much thos vacuum pushes back dirt if you bacl over it. I assume this is due to the brushroll design and part of what makes it so effective when used in a forward motion, but it does take some getting used to regarding your vacuuming patterns. Overall I would say there are definitely some flaws, but this is a solid choice for a vacuum and a great option for pet owners with mixed surface floors! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have two Old English Sheepdogs who do not shed, but whose long hair does manage to create some mighty dust bunnies. I needed to replace my old Bissell and went with the 2817. The difference with the 2817 is quite notable. Not only are the rugs and floors clearly much cleaner than they have been with this machine, but the dust in the house is at an all time low level. This is a purchase I am very pleased with.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This vacuum performed really well sensing the multiple surfaces I tested it on. It easily changes brush speed depending on the surface being cleaned. It was nice to have a vacuum that I could use on hard wood floors but then automatically sense without having to change the brush height when doing rugs/carpet. The vacuum seems to be built very well but is not overly heavy. I really like the LEDs on the front of the vacuum. They brighten up the area being vacuumed so I didn't miss anything. The tangle-free brush roll was a pleasant surprise as I have not had any problems with the brush getting tangle with hair/strings etc. This has been my favorite feature on this vacuum. Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for providing me with this vacuum.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Disappointed that this vacuum does not have the vacuum or suction to pick-up loose and visible dog fur the first pass. Had to go over the same spot several times to ensure the carpet was clean. This machine is about average of the ability to clean dog fur, for the price and hype this company should have made sure that this very expensive vacuum is better then a medium quality off brand machine. Nice and quiet, lightweight, cord is too short. Very upset that Bissell is now having a valentines sales and this is one of the vacuums that is excluded - really Bissell, you had to be this cheap

It's very simple to use and the fact that it can sense what kind of floor you're on is a game changer. I also love the light that shines on the floor so when you're in a darker room you can see what you're vacuuming. All in all this is a great vacuum that I would recommend! Gets the job done and it makes cleaning that much easier!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've had this vacuum for about two years now and it replaced my old Dyson. We moved to a house with ceramic tile floors and I needed something that would work well with these floors. I also have two golden retrievers and one of them is an English Cream. Those dogs shed like crazy and within two days my floors are completely covered in white hair and hair balls. Thankfully this vacuum has worked beautifully at picking up all of the hair and easily transitions from ceramic floors to area rugs with ease. I love the light at the front of the vacuum, it helps me see all of the hair on the floor. The only drawback is that the cord comes out of the bottom and I wish it was higher up on the machine. Other than that, everything else is pretty great and I would recommend this to anyone who has dogs that shed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am currently attempting to return. This only has some edge cleaning on the right side. The left side, not at all. The plastic that covers the brush comes further over on that side and prevents edge cleaning. It also does not have enough suction power. I had an older Bissel that I used for 8 years and LOVED! They no longer make it. Very disappointment.

I've been using a cordless stick vacuum for quite some time, and while I love it, it definitely has its pros and cons, just like this powerhouse upright vacuum! I was very impressed with its maneuverability on both hard and soft surfaces as well as it's suction power. It got up every single piece of dog hair and any dirt/debris off my floor. My floors haven't been this clean in so long! This vacuum really does the job and I can complete my whole home without emptying the filter more than once if at all. I love it's ability to sense the surface and how it switches gears for that specific floors needs. I do not love the toggle switch on the handle where you adjust the vacuum for hard or soft surfaces. It seems to be a bit too loose and floats around as you move instead of staying put on the location you need it to be. I have also gotten used to a cordless, so working with a cord again could be a bit frustrating at times having to plug and unplug as you move throughout the house. Since it's upright, it also doesn't get under my furniture without me completely moving pieces around, which I had grown to love with my other vacuum. What this vacuum lacks, it makes up for in the sheer cleaning power! With two very furry dogs and two toddlers, we have a lot to clean up constantly, and this really gets it done above any of our other vacuums! I was really impressed as a whole and the tangle free brush roll is priceless! I can't even tell you how huge of a feature that is with dogs where you don't have a mess to untangle to get your vacuum to continue to work properly. It did take me a minute to figure out how to empty the vacuum properly with minimal mess, so I do wish that was a bit more clear. It was fairly straight forward to use. All the various attachments come in handy and great with cleaning our baseboards too! 4.5/5!
