So…I stopped by our local Sam's Club today to pick up some staple items, just after we received 14 inches of snow. Now, our tractor with snow thrower does a great job, but our driveway is due for resurfacing and a big uneven so after the tractor has run through it all there are quite a lot of cracks and snow-patches left behind to clean up manually. As soon as I walked into the club there was a pallet of 50-lb bags of Miracle Melt with a price of $9.99/bag. Over the years I have found 2 brands at Home Depot: Blue Heat and Vaporizor to be quite reliable and efficient at melting snow and ice. Those bags range from $20-25 per 40/50-lb bag. When I saw the Miracle Melt being only $9.99 I turned to the Sam's App yo look up reviews…and I was taken aback just a bit by the average score. I thought to myself ‘no sense spending any money if it is junk'.
I weighed the issue while I made my rounds through the club picking up the staple items. What weighed on my mind was the low average rating was a result of a number of complaints about the price per bag…people complained that individual bags were only $10 but if you bought a pallet of 50 bags the cost per bag was $20. I see that, but I believe the $9.99 price per bag is a clearance price when a club is trying to move a pallet out that may have been returned or failed to be picked up after being special ordered. The stores don't have room to store extra merchandise, let alone a pallet of merchandise that weighs 2500 lbs! So…I decided to try it and bought 4 bags.
I will note one unmistakable difference between the other brands of ice melt and Miracle Melt…Miracle Melt crystals are more like large coarse sea salt crystals for cooking where the others are the size of rock salt crystals. Just a word of caution…spread these crystals lightly, as it is very easy to OVER spread; it takes the same number of Miracle Melt crystals to melt snow and ice as it takes the other larger crystals. Just because they are smaller doesn't mean you need to use more!
I cleared the driveways as much as I could with snowblowers and shovels (as always) and spread these crystals a bit on the heavy side the first run. The next morning I checked that section of driveway and all snow and ice was gone and a large quantity of Miracle Melt crystals were scattered all over that section - proving I used too much. What is absolutely awesome is I swept up those crystals and spread them over the next section and they worked as if they were just pulled from the bag! No waste here whatsoever. For the price I say buy as many as you can when at $9.99; I wish I had bought all on that pallet…kicking myself! 🙄🙂
👍👍 (two thumbs up)
