Our home is always changing--inside & out; & every change creates a new "pop":. This time we added a room!! It all started after switching out the last section of old board decking to brick, matching the rest of the existing bricked deck--improving both the look & function of our yard. But, looking out at the expanse of this all brick deck, even with colorful furniture & our usual riot of plants, something was missing. Somehow, we needed to frame that section, a place where we entertain and also shelter a lot of plants. (I'm a gardener). It's Florida; summer sun is merciless on human skin and, more importantly, all of our plants shriveling in our summer heat; they can't hop up and escape into the AC. What we needed was a pretty shelter from direct sun; we needed a pergola! And this baby is a champ. Ordering was easy, the perfect size for our spot, delivery on time; my husband Bill added 2 applications of weather coating, we hired the brick guys to assemble it (we are old :-)). And now we have more than a pergola; it is a ROOM-- partly nestled under our old magnolia, decorated by our happy shaded plants, and furnished by our colorful furniture (I am a painter), the pergola frames it all and creates the perfect space whose form is lovely and which functions to give us what we needed: a solid, sturdy, shade-providing structure. We already have subprojects planned: our copper pelican perches on the top corner; to add even more shade, we are installing lattice panels over the widely spaced roof slats, and we are adding electric outlets for some good old Florida fans, also hanging solar lights to line the top structure. I was impressed with the thoroughness that Backyard Discovery puts in their products. Written instructions and an app, some tools, and extra hardware. We stained the wood before assembly and carefully followed the instructions. It did take three to erect the posts, but the final construction was by myself. I highly recommend Backyard Discovery.

I’ll admit a little slow becoming a pergola advocate. With the Texas sun, I do want a little more protection when cooking outside than these things natively offer. This 12x20 monster replaces a pair of 10x13 canopies. The wind has blown here more this year than in the past 60 years. My cheap canopies didn’t stand a chance. The vibration from the wind loosened half the screws and both simply collapsed. And they acted like sails before collapsing. The family joke was me getting everyone to help move them back into place at family gatherings. This baby is over 700 lbs and rated for 100 mph winds. I cannot imagine it moving for some wimpy 40 mph breeze. I need to conjure up some Sun/rain protection, but I am beyond thrilled with it. I ordered the installation when I purchased the pergola. A precise date/time was set for the installation from emails they were coming from Back Yard Discovery. However, when the installers arrived without the pergola at the appointed hour, I realized there was a disconnect somewhere. The pergola magically arrived Friday before the 4th of July weekend. I called the installers back and darned if they didn’t come Saturday morning to install this thing. They just left. Other than signing their paperwork, I actually haven’t goner over it closely yet. But the installers were punctual, polite, and very, very efficient. This is the summer for backyard projects that I have anticipated for a long time. This pergola is key to housing my entire outside cooking world and to have it dine in time for the 4th of July makes me very happy. Thanks to everyone involved!

The pergola is well thought through in terms of its design. Each part is marked, the hardware comes in labeled bags. The accompanying BILT program makes it very easy to visualize. One improvement would be a diagram showing the exact center locations of the four posts.

I bought this a month ago and am pretty happy with the product. Instructions were good, but with warped wood for some pieces, the hardware was barely connecting. We found it easier to assemble the frame upside down, and it would have been better to assemble right next to the final location due to the weight.

Purchased this in June 2022 and my wife and I assembled the entire thing. It's not difficult just time consuming. It took us about 10 hours but again not difficult to do. The instructions are well organized. We put together most of the pieces in the garage and carried them to the back yard for total assembly. We have at least 5 neighbors who have asked questions and compliments us on it. We installed some roll shades as well for the afternoon sun and it's perfect. I expect to do a protectant stain coat this teak to keep the color so the cedar doesn't start looking gray like cedar does when it's weathered. Keep in mind this is Chinese cedar which is a bit different than American red cedar, but for the price, and knowing what you're going to get, you can't go wrong.

Kit is well thought out. The wood is not so good. I have had some punkie spots in the legs and there is signs of cracking now starting to show up after one winter season here in Michigan. Over all its ok but I don't know how long it will last. To bad the wood is not from North America.

I love the idea of this kit for the DIY’er. It’s like a huge Lincoln Log set. I haven’t ha stud opportunity to actually put it together yet. The transport company ruined a bunch of wood pieces and I’m waiting for the replacements to arrive. This company has excellent customer service and immediately addresses issues with a friendly and understanding representative. They are a model for other businesses. Although I wish my experience was much smoother, you can’t get upset when you are treated so kindly. Awesome!

Just bought 2 of the 16x12 pergolas to sit side by side. The first thing I noticed is the color is completely off from the photos online. One of the reasons I chose this pergola was because the color matched the rest of the wood in my yard. I understand that screens can distort color a bit but this is extreme and MUCH lighter than anticipated. It does state in the description that saturation can vary but I don’t even think it’s a saturation issue as it is maybe only 1 coat of stain added as opposed to more to get the proper color maybe to just get the product out faster? Not sure but make sure you don’t rely on the color if it’s important to you. The other thing is that several of the joists were pretty bowed. It didn’t prevent us from installing but just not super high quality for the price paid. A lot of the pieces are pretty lightweight and posts are hollow. Still not sure how this withstands the high winds that they say but we did attach it to the house and a concrete patio so we’ll see how it lasts to Florida storms. Overall it was relatively easy to put together but I likely would not purchase again. If you are making a decision based on what you see in photos make sure to do more research first.
