Last summer we finally got to realize our dream of having a backyard pergola. I researched designs and priced materials for building my own from scratch, and then I looked online at kits to compare. I am so glad I did! The Backyard Discovery kit cost less than the wood alone for building my own, and the assembly was super easy. The only tricky part was anchoring it to our patio: the provided anchors kept stripping so I had to replace with stronger ones. But other than that small issue everything else came together really well. And we love sitting outside in our new outdoor living room!

We've had this for awhile now. It's not exactly what the intended use was going to be, but we decided to go with an entertainment space (was originally doubled to use as covered carport but my SUV was too big). We are very pleased. It is well built (though the top boards could be a little sturdier). It has ample room for entertainment space and we've really enjoyed using it! It was also super easy to put together.

I was not disappointed with the look and style of the pergola. It did take some time to ship and arrive which could have been better but once it arrived it took just about as much time as they predicted to put it together, but the end result was beautiful!

Everyone that we have had over thinks it is great looking and a real value. Our contractor was amazed by the quality of the kit and had no trouble setting the footings in the new pavers. The service from BYD has been so good that we also bought one of the large Grill Gazebos which let me keep grilling during a really wet winter here in Northern California.

If you are on the fence deciding whether or not to purchase, make the purchase. We bought ours this past July and have been making it our own ever since. When we first received our on time shipment, we thought we better check all the parts right away in case we needed anything replaced. When I called customer service to tell them we wouldn’t be putting this together for a few weeks and what if we discovered at that time we needed replacement parts, customer service assured us they would send us whatever we needed and not to worry. We built our pergola for a few hours each day during the week so all we needed to do on Saturday was raise up the posts and add the cross beams. This definitely makes the project less daunting and it only took us 3 hours or so when we lifted the posts. We have received several compliments. The color you see in the photos is the actual color. We have not yet stained. The purlins that came with (top) were just ok. They seemed crooked when we screwed them together. In the end, we added 1x3 cedar slats so that we had more shade. Directions were straight forward.

Shipping was surprisingly fast. (1 week from purchase to delivery) Assembly was relatively easy. I put it together myself, with a little help from my wife and son when it came to installing the main joist beams. Finished structure was a little wobbly. But I chalk this up to the lightweight, soft, wood, and the manner of design which enables the whole thing to be hand delivered to your front door. (Main joists, which are comprised of three pieces bolted together, have a little too much play.) I did a couple of simple structural additions to firm up its integrity. We also added a shade cloth attached to the underside of cross joists. We did not use the top 2x2’s (intended for shade) as most were warped. We liked the idea of the cloth more anyways. All in all, for the cost, look (and easiness of constructing), we are very pleased.

Backyard Discovery must have made improvements to the QA of this product because mine fit together perfectly! The most time consuming part was re-staining it to fit the look I was going for, but it was well worth it. I was able to set it up over the course of an afternoon and couldn't be happier with the end result. At this price point and the ease of setup, I wouldn't recommend any other pergola.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We bought this Pergola a few months ago and we love it. Delivery was great! Assembly was fairly easy with 3 of us (took about 5 hours). We did not use the top layer of wood because we used polycarbonate roofing panels to provide protection during the rain. We also added outdoor curtains from Amazon to provide an additional touch. The pergola feels like it's great material. Overall we very happy with the product. Thanks!

Our home is always changing--inside & out; & every change creates a new "pop":. This time we added a room!! It all started after switching out the last section of old board decking to brick, matching the rest of the existing bricked deck--improving both the look & function of our yard. But, looking out at the expanse of this all brick deck, even with colorful furniture & our usual riot of plants, something was missing. Somehow, we needed to frame that section, a place where we entertain and also shelter a lot of plants. (I'm a gardener). It's Florida; summer sun is merciless on human skin and, more importantly, all of our plants shriveling in our summer heat; they can't hop up and escape into the AC. What we needed was a pretty shelter from direct sun; we needed a pergola! And this baby is a champ. Ordering was easy, the perfect size for our spot, delivery on time; my husband Bill added 2 applications of weather coating, we hired the brick guys to assemble it (we are old :-)). And now we have more than a pergola; it is a ROOM-- partly nestled under our old magnolia, decorated by our happy shaded plants, and furnished by our colorful furniture (I am a painter), the pergola frames it all and creates the perfect space whose form is lovely and which functions to give us what we needed: a solid, sturdy, shade-providing structure. We already have subprojects planned: our copper pelican perches on the top corner; to add even more shade, we are installing lattice panels over the widely spaced roof slats, and we are adding electric outlets for some good old Florida fans, also hanging solar lights to line the top structure. This will be the second summer we have used this pergola. I am still pleased with it. I followed others advice and treated the wood with spar urethane before assembly. It would be easier to assemble with a couple adults. However, I was able to put it up with a little help from my 11 year old daughter. When the Oklahoma heat ramps up, I put a shade cloth over it to provide more shade. Over all I am very pleased with the pergola.
