Nice for indoor potted plants.

This stuff is great for all your indoor plants. Dirt is nice and clean, plenty of peat, and vermiculite. Easy to use, no giant hard clumps. Easy to root plants in this too. I used this for sprouting seeds as well as potted plants. Worked well for all.

ruined my container garden

I have ten containers/boxes that I filled with this stuff and can't keep the stuff moist. I thought perhaps it was the heat and since it has cooled down considerably and I've had to rake the top of the potting mix because it hard pans, I still can't get it to stay moist. This is really bad. Here I am and it's almost winter and the stupid soil still can't retain moisture. And on top of that, I've got gnats everywhere. Don't know what kind but my plants are doing horribly and I don't know if it's because of those bugs or because of the moisture problem. I won't every buy it again. This and their Organic Mix that I tried after this are both horrible.

No Quality Control

I have used MG moisture control for several years. In 2023 I bought a few bags that were very poor quality, but this year I tried again as usually this is a great mix. Early spring the several bags of MG moisture control were once again great. So in May I bought 5 more which are junk. Simply wood that’s shredded, soaked and a tiny bit of white bits. The plants in this poorly composted mess have either died or grown poorly. This is more like mulch. Seems they run out of the good stuff and replace it with unfinished product charging the same price. I’m switching brands, way expensive and worthless. Check the bags before you take them home. Such a disappointment.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback.

Our potting mixes are made of composted forest products and contain no actual soil because this makes for a superior potting media compared to using soil. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction which often occurs with potting mixes composed primarily of topsoil (your typical "rich" looking black potting soil). The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots of the plant which improves plant performance. For years Professional growers have used potting media with a significant amount of bark pieces because it is a superior growing media for potted plants.

We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 877-220-3089 if we can further assist.

Use only if you want gnat infestation

According to many online reviews, I'm not the first to have bad experiences with this product! Weeks after transplanting my seedlings, the fungus gnats hatched and invaded my home. The website for this product states that the soil is NOT sterilized and if you have a gnat problem you need to make a further purchase of sand to cover your soil. Supposedly this gets rid of the gnats. I've had this problem with EVERY bag I have purchased over the last few years. I have continued to buy because I was hoping it wouldn't be EVERY bag, but now I'm tired of wasting my money. Scott's continues to make all sorts of excuses why this mixture is full of wood mulch, smells like a landfill and is infested, yet there are other products whose mix does not do these things. Save your money and buy a different brand!

Infested with gnats and caterpillar eggs.

I've always used this brand of soil and never had a problem until this year. I planted some flowers, lettuce, and tomatoes in containers this summer and all of a sudden noticed that there was worms eating all the leaves of my plants. I thought that they could have just migrated somehow to my second story balcony. I used some water and vinegar and they went away. A week later I go out and ALL the flowers were eaten and more worms had returned. I repeated the water and vinegar and bought an organic pesticide and got rid of them again. In this time I had recently transplanted some cilantro I had growing in the aero garden and this plant NEVER went outside. Guess what? A few week later I found a caterpillar on the cilantro! IN THE HOUSE!! Thank goodness it was just 1 and he didn't do much damage. A few weeks later however ALL 3 pots of my lettuce were completely destroyed because it seems now EVERYTHING was re-infested. I started to do some research and I did indeed find many caterpillar eggs in the soil. I thought it was some kind of fertilizer. About 3 days ago after (all I have left is two tomato plants) I found a huge caterpillar about 3 inches long just hanging on a branch. I collected it and did some research. It turns out to be an apple sphinx moth caterpillar (http://bugguide.net/node/view/41976). How awful it is that almost everything I grew got eaten by caterpillars that were hatched in the soil I bought. In essence, I paid for the plants and I paid to have them destroyed. I will NEVER EVER buy this substandard soil again.

We are sorry to hear about your experience with the Miracle Gro Potting Mix. We work very hard to make sure that you are getting the best soil possible. We do not sterilize our soils, nor do we treat our soils with any type of insecticide. Unfortunately, insects may enter a bag during shipping or storage and start to breed. If you find insects in your bag treating for the insect problem will typically reduce the chance of plant damage. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and we want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!

Bought this bag excited to repot my plants with my son. I remember my grandma using this soil as I gardened with her as a child. As my son and I were planting I seen some (what looked like water beads) moms you know what I’m talking about. There were TONS!!! I for some reason didn’t think anything of it since I’ve never seen them before. After gardening and doing my research, it appears they are gnat eggs (pictures online confirmed) then coming to the reviews I’m not the only one this has happened to. The soil was hard and clumpy, and moist. I’ll definitely be taking out my plants tomorrow. I’m not risking an infestation, because there were TONS of eggs!!!! Will not purchase again!!!

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback.

The small beads you are seeing in your Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix are not insect eggs. Many consumers do confuse these beads with insect eggs. These small, tan, yellow, green or clear-colored fertilizer particles absorb moisture allowing the liquid fertilizer inside to pass out of the prill and into the soil. If there is a store near you that sells Osmocote Plant Food, you can compare what you found in your soil with the plant food.

We want you to be confident in our products. Problem with water flow

I'm a Master Gardener and have had potted plants for years. Used Miracle Gro potting soil for years. This year picked up Moisture Control for outdoor pots. First soil stated "humping" thought it was from insects. Now mid August pots are smelling sour. Whatever is in mix is not letting water flow thru.

Gnats gnats gnats

Every plant in my house is full of fungal gnats since bringing this soil in and I have now seen plenty of reviews for this product stating the same. It doesn't control moisture at all; I've been waiting for weeks for my plants to dry out and they are still damp. No wonder the gnats won't away. Don't buy this, unless you want to kill your plants or spend money trying to get rid of tons of stubborn gnats.
