Fungus gnats? Here's a non-toxic and effective fix

I was wondering why I had fungus gnats! And YES Miracle-Gro, they ARE fungus gnats NOT fruit flies! The solution is to get an insect spray that contains Pyola. Garden Alive makes one. Spray the soil in your pots and the plants. Voila! Keep an eye on the plants to make sure you didn't miss any or more do not come 'home to roost'. But that will work. That and not buying this product!

Nice for indoor potted plants.

This stuff is great for all your indoor plants. Dirt is nice and clean, plenty of peat, and vermiculite. Easy to use, no giant hard clumps. Easy to root plants in this too. I used this for sprouting seeds as well as potted plants. Worked well for all.

Lacking required nutrition, not balanced

I went out of my way to buy the very best - I mean what could go wrong when you buy anything from Miracle Grow - but I set up two new large pots, each one using a complete bag of M-G Moisture Control potting mix to grow some tomatoes and both plants now have terrible Blossom End Rot. As this is caused by a lack of calcium I would have thought that the M-G product would have been better balanced to include calcium. Very disappointed.

New light blue bags have new different soil

I've purchased hundreds of bags of moisture control soil in the darker blue bags before this new look in the light blue bags. The new formula is TERRIBLE. I was used to healthy, beautiful, perfectly green plants, and now I get yellowing with purple stems. The nitrogen is sorely lacking. The soil is coated in mycelium when opening each bag, which isn't a bad thing, but there's also a lot of orange and brown mold on the surface of every bag I've opened. This new formula also creates a thick, crusty surface which makes water very difficult to penetrate the soil. Horribly disappointed. Miracle gro had a great product and for some reason went and ruined it.

horrible product

Hate this product!! I have been gardening with Miracle Gro for over 50 years and I have never had a worse experience. I thought this Moisture control sounded like a miracle BUT when I used it for transplanting my new seedlings they slowly rotted, killing 90% of them. I also used it for geraniums and they also died. Petunias...same thing. I will never buy this product again.

not happy

I brought this bag and re potted my plants after a week of being in the new soil and new pots my plants are limp and some of the leaves are dying. :( I'm guessing that maybe my plants could be in shock or something. I don't know if this is the same soil that was in the previous bags before Miracle-Gro changed the packing color. I won't buy this soil again that's for sure.

Infested with gnats and caterpillar eggs.

I've always used this brand of soil and never had a problem until this year. I planted some flowers, lettuce, and tomatoes in containers this summer and all of a sudden noticed that there was worms eating all the leaves of my plants. I thought that they could have just migrated somehow to my second story balcony. I used some water and vinegar and they went away. A week later I go out and ALL the flowers were eaten and more worms had returned. I repeated the water and vinegar and bought an organic pesticide and got rid of them again. In this time I had recently transplanted some cilantro I had growing in the aero garden and this plant NEVER went outside. Guess what? A few week later I found a caterpillar on the cilantro! IN THE HOUSE!! Thank goodness it was just 1 and he didn't do much damage. A few weeks later however ALL 3 pots of my lettuce were completely destroyed because it seems now EVERYTHING was re-infested. I started to do some research and I did indeed find many caterpillar eggs in the soil. I thought it was some kind of fertilizer. About 3 days ago after (all I have left is two tomato plants) I found a huge caterpillar about 3 inches long just hanging on a branch. I collected it and did some research. It turns out to be an apple sphinx moth caterpillar (http://bugguide.net/node/view/41976). How awful it is that almost everything I grew got eaten by caterpillars that were hatched in the soil I bought. In essence, I paid for the plants and I paid to have them destroyed. I will NEVER EVER buy this substandard soil again.

Good stuff!

I purchased another brand of soil that was organic...but was full of bugs...I had to repot every plant and wash the roots....I bought this one to replace the previous product and so far, I am happy with this one....I just needed a basic potting soil for house plants and this one fits the bill!

Not worth your money!!

After reading all the reviews I now know I'm not mistaken in thinking Miracle Gro is selling inferior products!! I couldn't figure out why the vegetables I planted last year didn't produce a thing. There are lots of wood pieces and really hard clumps that are not suitable for growing plants in. I spent a lot of money on plants and even more on the supposedly wonderful Miracle Gro and was extremely disappointed. I will never waste my money on their products again!!!

Nope!

Sadly the rumors are true and it comes with ghats. I really didn't think it was possible but sadly now my room is covered in gnats and by plants are likely going to die and my expensive seeds are going to be wasted. Not just that but there's a layer of what looks like algae growing on the top later because it never ever dries.. How is that even possible?

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback.

Insects could not survive the composting and packing process. However, it is possible for them to enter the bag during shipping and storage. Insects may also come in with soil of transplanted plant or enter through cracks, crevices, open windows or doors simply looking for suitable environment.

Fungal mold spores including mushroom producing fungus are a natural part of soils. It just takes the right conditions for the spores to develop into a fungus or mold. Our growing media products are not sterilized and may contain microorganism including fungus. In fact fungus mold have been scientifically proven to improve the growth of plants by releasing nutrients from the organic material that growing media are typically. We do not sterilize out growing media as micro organisms are an important component of growing media. The fungus mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth. Overgrowth occurs when the soil mulch is too wet.

We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers.
