Drainage problem with large indoor planters
I purchased this product specifically because I needed a potting soil for large indoor potted plants and small trees. Unfortunately, water drains through this soil so quickly that most of the water and water-soluble nutrients end up flooding the catch basins under the plants and trees in those containers in which I have used this soil. These large plants have been transplanted every autumn for the last five years, and until the introduction of this product, there had been no problems with maintaining proper soil moisture until the use of this product. Unfortunately, we will be forced to wait until a "warm spell" here in Central PA to wheel these plants and trees outside to replace this expensive and disappointing product rather than continue the inconvenience and added expense of using a circulation pump to move the water from the catch basins back into the plants' root systems until the soil becomes adequately moist. We have spread the soil in the remaining bags on our outside planting beds so we get some use out of this product. A real disappointment coming from a reputable company!
We are sorry to hear about your experience with the Miracle Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix. There can be some soil that escapes out of the bottom of the container at the initial watering when re-potting. However, this should lessen as you continue to care for the plants and it should not affect the performance of the product. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience please contact us to see what can be done. http://tinyurl.com/7ag7a3n
New light blue bags have new different soil
I've purchased hundreds of bags of moisture control soil in the darker blue bags before this new look in the light blue bags. The new formula is TERRIBLE. I was used to healthy, beautiful, perfectly green plants, and now I get yellowing with purple stems. The nitrogen is sorely lacking. The soil is coated in mycelium when opening each bag, which isn't a bad thing, but there's also a lot of orange and brown mold on the surface of every bag I've opened. This new formula also creates a thick, crusty surface which makes water very difficult to penetrate the soil. Horribly disappointed. Miracle gro had a great product and for some reason went and ruined it.

Easy to use for happy plants!
MiracleGrow is an all around potting soil for most needs. The product comes in different sized bags. The smaller bag is convenient for small projects such as potting one plant or adding to an existing planting. The MiracleGrow soil is light and easy on new roots. It balances moisture after watering and you don't have to water plants every day. So easy to use with confidence right out of the bag. I always feel I have nestled my plants into their new arrangement comfortably when I use MiracleGrow.
Infested with gnats and caterpillar eggs.
I've always used this brand of soil and never had a problem until this year. I planted some flowers, lettuce, and tomatoes in containers this summer and all of a sudden noticed that there was worms eating all the leaves of my plants. I thought that they could have just migrated somehow to my second story balcony. I used some water and vinegar and they went away. A week later I go out and ALL the flowers were eaten and more worms had returned. I repeated the water and vinegar and bought an organic pesticide and got rid of them again. In this time I had recently transplanted some cilantro I had growing in the aero garden and this plant NEVER went outside. Guess what? A few week later I found a caterpillar on the cilantro! IN THE HOUSE!! Thank goodness it was just 1 and he didn't do much damage. A few weeks later however ALL 3 pots of my lettuce were completely destroyed because it seems now EVERYTHING was re-infested. I started to do some research and I did indeed find many caterpillar eggs in the soil. I thought it was some kind of fertilizer. About 3 days ago after (all I have left is two tomato plants) I found a huge caterpillar about 3 inches long just hanging on a branch. I collected it and did some research. It turns out to be an apple sphinx moth caterpillar (http://bugguide.net/node/view/41976). How awful it is that almost everything I grew got eaten by caterpillars that were hatched in the soil I bought. In essence, I paid for the plants and I paid to have them destroyed. I will NEVER EVER buy this substandard soil again.
We are sorry to hear about your experience with the Miracle Gro Potting Mix. We work very hard to make sure that you are getting the best soil possible. We do not sterilize our soils, nor do we treat our soils with any type of insecticide. Unfortunately, insects may enter a bag during shipping or storage and start to breed. If you find insects in your bag treating for the insect problem will typically reduce the chance of plant damage. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and we want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. Flies
I bought a small bag to repot an indoor plant. I kept it in the house and the next day I opened it. I had read that sometimes gnats can grow inside of potting soil bags. So I moved the bag around and sure enough little tiny flies where inside the bag. I saw at least 6. I took the bag back to Walmart and they gave me a refund. I believe that this is something that happens at no fault of the store or product brand. I purchased a smaller bag of Schultz potting soil and it was fine.
Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix
Purchased this product because the price was reduced at the end of the traditional planting season here. Would not have purchased it, if the price was not reduced. Personal cost of living is up 65% with current government. This translates to prices being the prime driver in making all purchases. Have no experience with this product but its claim to protect against over %26 under watering would be appropriate with the weather here.
Use only if you want gnat infestation
According to many online reviews, I'm not the first to have bad experiences with this product! Weeks after transplanting my seedlings, the fungus gnats hatched and invaded my home. The website for this product states that the soil is NOT sterilized and if you have a gnat problem you need to make a further purchase of sand to cover your soil. Supposedly this gets rid of the gnats. I've had this problem with EVERY bag I have purchased over the last few years. I have continued to buy because I was hoping it wouldn't be EVERY bag, but now I'm tired of wasting my money. Scott's continues to make all sorts of excuses why this mixture is full of wood mulch, smells like a landfill and is infested, yet there are other products whose mix does not do these things. Save your money and buy a different brand!

horrible product
Hate this product!! I have been gardening with Miracle Gro for over 50 years and I have never had a worse experience. I thought this Moisture control sounded like a miracle BUT when I used it for transplanting my new seedlings they slowly rotted, killing 90% of them. I also used it for geraniums and they also died. Petunias...same thing. I will never buy this product again.
We are concerned to hear this about Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix, as when used according to directions, soils will not harm plants. We would like the opportunity to gather some additional information and offer assistance. Please reach out to our Consumer Services team at 888-295-6902 for assistance.
Works for me~
I have used this product for over two years now. My plants have survived and thrived. Years past, my plants died-all of them. No matter the pot, my plants survive now. (Now days, I have begun to recycle padded mailing envelops to line the pot sides so they aren't quite as susceptible to the extreme Texas weather. )
Aphids!!!
Bought this item and transplanted my baby tomato plants into it in fresh, clean peat pots, never been used, within 3 weeks I was INFESTED with Aphids! Poor little plants are dying. There are no other plants around them that could have caused it. They were alone under a gro light that is several inches above them.
We are sorry to hear about the condition of your tomato plants. Aphids are soft-bodied insects that suck the sap from the tender new growth of plants. A tell tale sign of aphids is the honeydew that they secret. Control quickly is the key to saving your plants. We want you to be confident in our products.
