Fat Tire Amber was simply awesome. It was smooth and flavorful. It was like an old friend I could count on in times of triumph and times of sorrow. I saw the new version on the shelf and thought “they certainly made it better.” Wow, was I wrong. It was terrible. The flavor is gone. There’s almost nothing left. Please, please bring back the original.

When I was in college, I drank beer. Shocker right? And like a lot of people who go to college, I had what I considered at the time a “hipster” roommate. That’s to say, someone more open minded, outgoing, and eccentric than me. Over the course of a year, we became best friends, and drank a lot of beer together. After months of drinking big name, commercial brands, he let me take a sip of a Fat Tire he was enjoying, and it rocked me to my core. I even asked, “what’s going on with this beer? Why’s it so much better?” I had tried ipas and other different styles to the basic light lager that gets guzzled by the gallons daily on college campuses, but Fat Tire was truly the first beer I had that I considered complex and inviting. I can remember where I was and PinPoint that exact moment where a craft beer put the hook in me. Now, fifteen years later, I’m the head brewer at a brewery trying to leave my mark and produce the best beer I can for the next generation of beer drinkers, as well as the older generations still around to enjoy it. For starters, I miss the old familiar packaging I was used to seeing, but it now touts that it's America's first carbon neutral beer, which is perplexing and impressive at the same time. The original, the ubiquitous, the absolutely delicious Fat Tire is a classic for a reason. So much flavor, love the roasty, toasty aroma, and it’s smooth. People talk about “gateway” beers—beers that showed you that beer could be more than just what is advertised in the big spendy commercials. Fat Tire was my gateway beer. It’s a tried and true standard—always delicious, no matter how many times I’ve had it.
