There are a lot of different factors that can unfortunately contribute to these kind of symptoms you have told us about. Some examples include: friction, nutrition, teething, eating new solids, taking antibiotics. The “scientific” cause is when an enzyme in your baby’s poo irritates the skin in a high-moisture environment. In regards to the scent you've noticed, the manufacturing of diapers is a very fast process, from making them, packaging them, to having them on-shelf ready to buy. Thus, the product ingredients being so fresh and tightly packaged together, the odors from all the ingredients and materials in the diapers do not always get time to settle, which means when you open the packet, you may experience an odor smell of a mixture the fresh ingredients. If you leave the bag open for a couple of minutes you should find the smell disappears. Alternatively, if the diapers have been transported or stored someplace where they could've been exposed to other products with a strong odor smell, this can also create a short-term scent, and again, you should find the smell disappears within a couple of minutes after leaving the bag open. Disposable diapers are primarily made of polymers found in other consumer products like clothing, furniture upholstery, food containers, and paper products. The pH of disposable diapers is comparable to the pH of normal skin, meaning compared to skin, they are neither acidic (low pH) nor alkali (high pH), so they cannot cause a chemical burn.
