Where Did Empanadas Originate?

There is a rich history into the origins of empanadas that dates to 100 BC in the Middle East. The art of filling dough with a variety of meats and produce migrated from Persia to the countries of Spain and Portugal over the centuries. In the Spanish language, “empanar” literally mean to roll or cover.

During Colonial times, ships set sail for the New World with this convenient and unique handheld delicacy that could be easily heated on rocks next to campfires. Adopted quickly by the Mayans and Aztecs, a whole new variety of empanada concepts were born. Since pumpkins are indigenous of Central America, a new flavor was eventually filled into the crimped dough.
