About this item

Product details

Delicious and Nutritious

Cara Cara oranges are less acidic and much sweeter than most other varieties of oranges. Their flavor is described as a cross between a very sweet orange and berries, usually raspberry or blackberry. The pith is thinner, so they are less bitter and taste juicier. They have an orange exterior peel that encases a unique pink interior. This beautiful color is due to the high amounts of lycopene found in them. These oranges are available from December through May and provide good nutritional value. One Cara Cara orange provides 100% of daily vitamin C requirement, which is the most of any citrus variety.

What to Look For

A ripe Cara Cara feels heavy for its size, has a firm yet slightly springy texture, and emits a fragrant citrus aroma. The skin should display a bright orange hue without any traces of green. When fully mature, a Cara Cara orange typically reaches the size of a baseball.

Storage Tips and Tricks

Cara Cara oranges can be kept on the counter out of direct sunlight for one to two weeks. For longer storage, around a month or so, opt for the crisper drawer in the fridge. If you keep them refrigerated, make sure to bring them to room temperature before eating or using them to cook.

Versatile Uses and Pairings

Cara Cara oranges are great for juicing, snacking, baking, for use in recipes, or simply to eat as is. The zest and juice are great to use in a vinaigrette with whole grain mustard, white wine vinegar and olive oil – perfect for dressing a salad or greens. Cara Cara’s big juicy flavor also makes them perfect for baking and dessert. They are ideal for an orange cake, especially the glaze. Because of their natural sweetness, they are perfect for sorbet, custards and cheesecake. Cara Cara oranges are ideal on the side of roasted and charred meats such as a tri-tip roast salad with Cara Cara orange honey vinaigrette. They have a more saturated flavor than most other oranges, so use them for a prominent orange flavor. Try a Cara Cara orange cottage cheese toast or infused focaccia bread.

Deliciously Juicy, But Eat Them Fast!

These Cara Cara oranges are wonderfully sweet and juicy, making them a fantastic fresh treat. Just be sure to take them out of the bag, wash, and separate them immediately, as they tend to mold quickly if left enclosed for more than a few days.

South America fruit aren't that good.

Taste was okay but not very sweet. These are still an early crop that were grown in Chile. 3 went bad the next day and 1 more the day after. The previous the Caras were from South Africa. None of those went bad and they were sweeter.

Most were edible

The oranges tasted good but were not fresh. They bruised really quick and had to throw several of them away.
