How to Choose the Right Full-Size Mattress

A full mattress hits a sweet spot between compact and comfortable. It is a solid upgrade from a twin and a smart fit for solo sleepers who want more room to stretch out.

A full mattress, sometimes called a double, measures 54 by 75 inches. The extra 16 inches of width compared to a twin mattress makes a big difference for single adults. It fits well in smaller bedrooms and guest rooms and doesn’t take over the floor plan. Sam's Club carries full mattresses in memory foam, hybrid, innerspring and pillow top styles across a full range of firmness levels.

Who Is a Full Mattress Right For

Full size mattresses are a popular choice for single adult sleepers, teenagers that have outgrown a twin, and guest rooms where you want to host a couple, but don’t have space for a queen. Two adult sleepers can share a full, though most might find the width a bit tight for comfortable long-term use. For couples, a queen mattress is usually the better pick.

Matching Firmness to Your Sleep Style

Your sleep position is a strong guide to the right firmness level. Side sleepers do well on a soft to medium mattress that cushions pressure points at the hips and shoulders. Back sleepers benefit from a medium-firm mattress that maintains spinal alignment. Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent the lower back from dipping. A hybrid mattress is a breathable and durable option that works well across sleep positions, while a memory foam mattress offers excellent contouring and motion isolation.
