How to Choose the Right Firm Mattress

A firm mattress isn’t just for people who like to sleep on a hard surface. For some, it’s the key to feeling properly supported all night and waking up without back pain.

A firm mattress is typically rated a 7 or 8 out of 10 on a firmness scale. It supports the body rather than contouring to it, which helps keep the spine in a neutral position throughout the night. Sam's Club carries firm mattresses in innerspring, hybrid, and memory foam options across all standard mattress sizes. For an even more supportive surface, browse ultra-firm mattresses as well.

Who Should Sleep on a Firm Mattress

Firm mattresses are best suited to back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and heavier sleepers. Back sleepers benefit from the even surface support that keeps the hips from sinking and maintains spinal alignment across the lower back. Stomach sleepers need a firm surface to prevent the midsection from dipping, which would arch the lower back and cause discomfort over time. Heavier sleepers benefit from the firmer resistance because it prevents excessive sinking that can reduce support and accelerate wear on the mattress.

Side sleepers generally find firm mattresses too rigid at the shoulders and hips, which can create pressure points over time. If you’re a side sleeper, a medium or soft mattress is likely a better fit.

Firm Mattress Types to Consider

A firm innerspring mattress offers good edge support and breathability, which makes it a popular choice for hot sleepers. A firm hybrid mattress adds foam comfort layers over the coil system for a bit more cushioning. A firm memory foam or latex mattress has a slow, contouring feel that some sleepers prefer for lower back support.
