The Kamado Big Joe III is an excellent grill and I can see why it’s regarded as the best on the market.
Unboxing: It comes well packaged and weighs about 500lbs on the pallet. Once you unbox and remove the contents, be prepared to lift the main body (about 250lbs). Takes about 20mins to set up the stand; make sure to put the locking wheels on the same side. You can have this up and running in an hour or two.
What’s inside: It’s not mentioned clearly in the description but this comes with everything, including the divide and conquer tiered rack, deflector plates and SloRoller for smoking.
First cook: This is a very big Kamado so you’re going to need a decent amount of lump coals to get it will get very hot and stay hot for a long time. We threw on Korean short ribs, shrimp and chicken. You’ll have some hot spots, but spread the coals before you start. Also adjust the grill racks to the right level for the type of sear you want before you start cooking. It’ll be too hot to readjust later. Food came out amazing with great flavors!
Pro tips: get long heat resistant gloves to save your arms. Also, get your vents adjusted and the fire dialed in before you start. Take your time.
Overall: great grill! Well made and setup was a breeze. The added details of a spring-assisted lift and locking lid is a bit differentiator from the other brands.
