When I saw that a chocolate brownie batter cake was now available, I was excited and really looked forward to getting it for my daughter's birthday which was just a week away from when I first learned about this cake so the timing was perfect.
Twenty dollars for a cake is a lot for us. That's the type of purchase that would be saved for a special occasion, but even then, we almost always opt for a homemade cake or box mix because you can't beat the price and you usually know what flavors you like. You know what to expect and usually wont be disappointed. This year, though, we decided to splurge and get this cake, considering it to be an extra special day.
- The appearance of the cake was very nice. Looks just like the picture and would definitely appear to a chocolate lover. Once sliced, its less appealing, but still decent. It looks very bland, but hey, its chocolate so I was still happy.
- The actual chocolate cake part was moist and flavorful; no complaints there.
- There is a filling layer, but you can hardly see it because its the same color as the cake. I guess this is supposed to be where the brownie batter flavor comes in, but none of us got that at all. Just some sort of a chocolate flavor, but it was kind of crunchy (think medium sugar crystal type of crunch). Nothing special at all. Not even noteworthy.
- The chocolate icing is supposed to be brownie batter flavored, too, but didn't get any brownie batter taste her either. The only taste was plain ol' chocolate, but WAY too sweet.
- The chocolate flakes on top are very good, if you're willing to pick them off as to avoid having to eat the icing.
- I think the ratio of cake:filling:icing is quite perfect, but it just didn't work out with this cake since its so overly sweet and lacking flavor.
Three of us tried the cake and none of us care for it. Its very disappointing and reenforces my feeling that it just isnt worth it to buy premade cakes. Aside from the high cost, you're always gambling on whether or not it'll taste good and, in cases like this one, you end up wasting a good chunk of money.
I suppose returning the cake for a refund might be an option for some people, but considering we don't live in the same town as where our Sam's Club is, it's not worth making a special trip out there just for that. Unfortunately.... because this was a major waste.
